After years of playing guitar I took the plunge and purchased a D-28. This is truly an investment $$!! This guitar plays like nothing I have ever played!!! It oozes craftmanship, quality and tone. I literally can't stop playing it. There truly is something different at this price point. Chris at L&M in Brantford has been and is wonderful to deal with! It's nice to buy from someone who you have a professional relationship with!

I got my Lethbridge Long & McQuade store folks fired up to find me a re-issue of the 16 E Martin which has been around for a very long time, and then seemed to disappear. They looked for one just about everywhere in Canada. No dice. All they could say is that there were 10 of these coming into their warehouse sometime in late autumn and that they might be able to snag one. More importantly, Martin would not guarantee any deliveries at all. So, much as I wanted one of these electric nylon guitars, I might have to wait until 2022, or even 2023. So I began my own search, going as far as England, Texas and Mexico. No dice. And then, one day I found one. The very last one on this side of the Atlantic. I snapped it up and have never ever looked back. While I didn't technically buy it from L&M, they did all they could and then some, and since all of my good tone-wood guitars were bought from L&M I wanted to at least let customers know what a great guitar this Nylon model is. Everything about it is well designed and the finish is exquisite. I fits my hand and body size perfectly. It has a newly designed pickup system that is a joint effort of Martin and Fishman and it does a great job of delivering pure notes from all six strings. There are three adjustment thumb dials just inside the sound hole that work ergonomically to the point where I didn't need to think about them. It records really well in either straight to mic/sound card or audio interfaces to pro-level DAW modalities. And if I want to, I can sound like a classical guitarist, or, someone playing a hot Fender Strat, all with the same guitar and strings. I really appreciate that kind of flexibility. So this guitar will be kept in the family for decades. One of my classical guitars, now 50 years old, will also stay with my descendants. And it doesn't hurt that all of them are appreciating in value between 10 and 20% year over year. I have never heard even one Martin owner express buyer's remorse concerning a Martin made in the Nazareth Shop as mine was. Quite the opposite and I have to say, that with this Martin Nylon, I am very happy. Besides. if Willy can become a mega star with Trigger, that's enough for me.

After a lot of soul searching and a lot of great advice from Bruce and Steve of the Brantford store, I made the switch from the Taylor family to the Martin D-28. I looked at the Taylor 414ce, the Gibson J45 and the Martin. I loved the 414ce, but my tinnitus was aggravated by the brightness of Taylors in general which was the main reason for looking for a new guitar. The Gibson just didn’t feel right but the Martin did. After three days of constant playing I can only say that this guitar is fantastic and lives up to all the hype.

I started playing guitar in the late 70’s and soon found out that Martin guitars were the best if not one of the best acoustic guitar makers in the world but I thought that anyone who would pay that much money for a guitar was crazy. Then in 2014 I finally bought a D28, and I think it’s worth every penny. Sounds great with good bottom end and crisp and clear highs. I guess I went crazy.

Bought my D-28 from L&M in Toronto in 1971 for around $800. Still plays and sounds awesome! Its been through a lot... finish is crackled and theres a few scratches of course. It is the only thing of value that I managed to hold on to for all these years! Not sure how the new ones compare ... I have tryed a few in the local stores and they play and sound great too1

Went to a local Guitar shop on my Birthday in Toronto 40 years ago ( 1977 ) to buy a Martin D28, ended up buying a New Larrivee that still is used on a daily basis. Today after 40 years of me telling my Wife about why I bought the Larrivee over their D28 and saying, one day I want a D28 I got the surprise of my life with a brand new Martin 28, no sleep for this boy tonight, gonna play this until the cows come home. Thanks L&M for taking great care off my wife, you guys rock.

Wow the price of this guitar went up a bit lol. Had her when she was 2 grand. This is my 3rd review and I've had this guitar for almost 5 years now and thought I'd give another update. Pros: Aesthetically pleasing, very easy to play, stays in tune and has the most beautiful rich warm tone. I could sit there and strum a G chord all day. Cons: Now this may vary on how you take care of your guitar and where you live. Like I said in a previous review, the frets popped, got them fixed and they got sharp again, so I bought a tool and fixed it myself. The humidipaks I also previously talked about didn't help with the frets popping in the hard case, it actually might have been a part of why they popped and my neck warped a bit. In saying that my neck did warp so I adjusted the rod to get rid of the buzz but can't fix the dead noted between the 9th and 14th frets. Still played beautifully below the 9th. Looking down the neck I can see that warped drop down off of the body at the heel. My friend has had his now for 2 years and using humidipaks with no trouble. All guitars are different so it may happen to him later, it might not. Very dry winters here in Nunatsiavut and I am using humidifiers but those electric heaters are killers also. I will try to get her fixed.

...and I got my D28 in 1977. I'm the original owner. The finish has darkened, the sound is deeper and more ''blooming,'' and the neck is still straight. Naturally, there's a bit of wear on the fretboard after all this time, but that's minor. It lives in it's hardshell case when it's not being played. Best acoustic I've ever played, bar none. And yes...I still gig with it. Buy one, keep it forever, hand it down to you kids. It's a treasure.

I bought my 2008 new from the SE Long & McQuade in Calgary. I had always wanted a J-45 and it was Gibson month. I couldn't find a J-45 I liked and, having never even considered Martins, had this one put in my lap by the wonderful people there for comparison. I remember saying to the salesman that it was the sound that I had in my head; that it was what an acoustic guitar should sound like. Maybe it was the straight bracing that made it sound clear and focused; I don't know. I bought it the next day. I never considered HDs or -35s or Vs or anything else because I was already pretty much at the top of my price range. I have friends with different variants and none are better or worse - just different flavours. Being in very dry Calgary I got a soundhole humidifier and a hygrometer for my case and made sure that it lived in the case when not being played. When they're new it's really important to keep an eye on them if you're in a place that's very dry or very humid. I found that it changed significantly in volume and tone the first few months and then less so after that. Now that it's 8 years old and in Victoria's 50% humidity I don't need to pay so much attention. I got it before the exchange went a bit crazy but it's still worth it at these prices. Sure, try all the variants and see what you want. There's some that are cheaper, some more expensive, but with a solid wood Martin it will last longer than you do so pick one you're happy with. If you're a young person and thinking it's too much money I would counsel to stretch and get a good acoustic that will last you the rest of your life. You will not regret it, you will not remember the pain of buying it forever. You will, however, have a life of playing a beautiful guitar. I have this and a Telecaster and it's all I really need.

Bought mine in 2010 before the USD/Cdn exchange rate got out of hand for about $2200. Between my wife and I, we also own a Taylor 314ce, Taylor 614ce, and a Gibson J-45 among others. The D-28 is hands down the crown jewel in them all. Large, full sound with generous bottom end, immaculate construction with grade A materials, feels like home when played, sounds great recorded (I use an AKG 414 and a Rode NT2A for mics). The one that all other Dreadnoughts are based on and judged against, this is a superior instrument that hits all of the points on the wishlist without being unnecessarily ornate (i.e. the D-45). With the exchange rate the way it is now, I'm not sure I would pay over $3500 to buy another, but as a hobbyist, I don't think I would lay down that much cash for any one guitar.

I have been playing guitar for over 50 years. Have owned a few acoustics including a Martin d18 back in the early 70s. I couldn,t afford to keep up the payments back then so had to bring it back. After many years of dreaming about owning another martin I found my D28 on sale and could not pass it up. What a beautiful tone. Absolutely amazing. I had it set up by a reputable luthier and it plays and sounds like a dream. Tone is everything for me. If you get the opportunity, buy one. You will never regret it.

Purchased this guitar as my first guitar to learn on at 38 years young. I wanted a guitar that that didn't make any compromises and this delivers! The Gibson's seemed cheap in comparison (J-45 or Hummingbird for example). I love the simplicity and amazing attention to detail on this guitar. No bells and whistles, just an amazing guitar without any major statements. The black pick gaurd to me is the best and have always been a minimalist, so works for me. Enjoy learning guitar on this baby knowing it doesn't get much better than this!

originally was going to buy D-28HD but...once I played a single chord on the D-28 Sunburst I was in total love. I bought this guitar after playing it for a grand total of 5 minutes! The sustain and rich bottom end floored me and most of all the feel and overall sound just made it the absolute, by far, obvious choice. Sunburst was bonus!

I have owned this guitar since August 2014. Bought it in Victoria. It is a beautiful classic design, solid as a rock, you don't flex the neck on one of these to get some tremolo! I played it against a HD28 before buying and personally preferred the D28. I play rhythm in a classic rock/blues jam group and do not need any electronics with this guitar in many venues, it is a cannon with great lows and crisp range throughout. Action is dead on but with the medium strings you need strong fingers, any slips are instantly heard, the better you play it the better it responds. This guitar took about 2 to 3 weeks of regular playing to open up and break in, the sound improves and changes significantly over this period. Have fun!

I looked for a guitar with the perfect tone for over 30 years. I've never been a brand name type of guy. I even lived just outside of Nazareth Pa. and drove by the factory many times. I finally bought my martin D28 2 years ago...you should hear it now! And it's just starting to open up. My advice? Don't waste time like I did, just spend the money and get yourself a piece of history. There's a reason the D28 is the most copied acoustic.

I had a friend that fell in love with my D-28 and he went to try one out in a local store. He was not impressed. So there are the display/stock guitars that are used by so many ppl that may not be in the best of shape. I told him to get it brand new and he did. He is also a proud owner now. I just wanted a decent looking guitar with a plain black pick guard and am I glad I picked this one. The sound is just soo good! She stays in tune very well and I stock up on Humidipaks to take care of mine in our super dry winters. The action is at a perfect low for easy playing and I don't think i'll ever need another unless I really wanna hit those high notes and have a cutaway.

I "stumbled" on this "gem" back in september 2012 and bought it in november. left-handed; gently used. a truly iconic, classic acoustic guitar! it's a clean, beautiful guitar with great sound! i've concluded that to pay any more for an acoustic guitar you are only getting "bells and whistles!" I highly recommend the D-28!

I recently decided to pursue Bluegrass music, specifically solo fiddle tunes on guitar. The Taylor GS-8 thatI originally purchased (great sounding guitar BTW) was really fighting me on some parts of the neck. I have small hands and had dedicated most of my close to 30 yrs plying to the electric, so I figured I'd just have to suck it up and persevere until I got stronger on the acoustic. Then one day I saw this D-28 at my local L&M and tried it out. It just fit like a glove, the neck is so comfortable and the sound is well, pure Martin. I really don't think you can get better than that. I've owned two high end Taylors now and they're both gone. The Martin is here for life.

If you're looking for a hard working acoustic guitar, and don't need the ornate details, this is what you need! In terms of tone, playability and crafstmanship, this is without doubt one of the finest mass produced guitars on the market. Living in Canada, all I can suggest is buy a humidifier and keep it in a temperature controlled room, in it's case, whenever not being played. The finish is slightly thin, so TLC is required when owning one of these beauties. Cleaning with a slightly damp cloth after every session or so, is all that is required to keep your D-28 in tip top shape. I'd recommend this guitar to anyone looking to step up to the next level in their guitar purchasing. From fingerstyle to flatpicking to just regular old strumming, this guitar handles it all.. and with class. With that said, I do give this box a perfect 10.

The only flaw I can find in this otherwise superior acoustic guitar is the 'plasic' strap button on the bottom of the instrument. Would like brass. Not a big deal. I can probably find one. In general, the D-28 is the finest acoustic guitar I have ever owned or played. Playability is top notch. Resonance and tone are beyond superb. I,ve been playing everything from jazz to country for nearly fifty years. I know a thing or two about guitars. "American made" is a real bonus for me!

Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
