Jazz Improvisation Clinic with Ernie Kalwa - Waterloo

Jazz Improvisation Clinic with Ernie Kalwa - Waterloo

We all want to become better jazz improvisers and take our skills to the next level, but many musicians aren’t sure how to improve their jazz chops.

You may relate to one or more of the following problems:

• You don’t know where to start to improve your jazz improvisation skills.
• You spend hours playing music and practicing things you are already good at.
• You’re not exactly sure what you should be practicing, to improve your playing.
• You have some experience already, but you feel that your improv skills have plateaued, and you aren’t sure what to do next.

In this 2-hour workshop, Ernie Kalwa will offer tips and tricks from his experience performing and teaching jazz to help with technique and concepts, scales and modes, chord voicings, rhythmic phrasing, listening and transcribing tools and skills, improv exercises, and more. From beginner to advanced, participation is encouraged!

Ernie Kalwa is a graduate of the University of Waterloo in Mathematics and Music and now teaches saxophone at the UW. Playing professional gigs for over 40 years in dance bands, concert bands, Dixieland, Ska, R&B, and saxophone quartets, he has traveled to play in festivals throughout the United States and Canada.
