FREE Improvisation Clinic with Extreme Flutist Bill McBirnie! - Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto
This free clinic will appeal to flutists and doublers—as well as any other instrumentalists—who want to explore the alternative techniques required to play convincingly in jazz and other non-classical idioms. Bill will describe how you can modify your physical approach in order to achieve more authentic—as well as more musical—results in non-classical settings.
This clinic will also appeal to improvisors in general by investigating constructive approaches to the theory that will ultimately enable you to improvise fluently.
Bill McBirnie has attained an international standing as one of the world’s foremost jazz and Latin flutists. His longstanding commitment to the instrument as well as the craft of improvisation has earned him consistently unequivocal acclaim and awards, here in Canada and abroad, including Flutist of the Year (Jazz Report Awards), a "triple crown" winner in all three of the Jazz Flute (1) Soloist, (2) Masterclass and (3) Big Band Competitions (National Flute Association in the USA), a Best Jazz Album award for Mercy featuring Robi Botos (Toronto Independent Music Awards), a nomination for Best Jazz Album for his organ trio album, Find Your Place featuring Bernie Senensky (Independent Music Awards in the USA), and JUNO Nomination for The Silent Wish with Bernie Senensky in the Best Instrumental Album category.
As a testimony to his noteworthy place in the international flute community, Bill has been designated a Haynes Artist with the venerable flute maker, Wm. S. Haynes Co., and he was solicited personally by the esteemed classical flutist, Sir James Galway (with whom he has performed at Koerner Hall in Toronto), to serve as Sir James’ resident Jazz Flute Specialist at the official Sir James Galway website.
