Free Piano Workshop with Debra Wanless - Various Locations
Celebrating Canada Music Week with the ABC‘s of Canadian Music!
Canada’s rich music history has grown from a diverse society – embracing indigenous music, folkloric content, historical events, multi-culturalism and the evocation of the visual elements of our spectacular Canadian geography.
Canadian piano music has flourished in the last forty years, providing students and pianists at every level with a wide range of styles. It is possible to use current Canadian music to create a holistic programme with offerings in Neo Baroque /Classical /Romantic and Impressionistic styles, as well as jazz, pop, sacred and 20th /21st century idioms.
This fast paced workshop will share new and exciting Canadian piano solos and ensembles. Join Debra to hear back stories/inspirations, pedagogy tips and elements and ideas on how to incorporate these titles into every program.
Debra is a pedagogy specialist, educator, composer, and is also the principal and founding member of Northern Lights Canadian National Conservatory of Music and the three-day Piano Pedagogy workshop, Summer Sizzle. Debra has collaborated with Canadian composers, festivals, conservatories and publishing companies to encourage, promote and even discover new Canadian Music. She is the author of the popular Let’s Begin Piano Series, the Creative Learning resources as well as many other titles. A recipient of the ORMTA Special Teacher Award, Debra also holds the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, and was a finalist for the 2011 Louis Applebaum Composer Award for Music for Young People.
