Demystifying Modes Workshop with Debra Wanless - Toronto, ON
Creative Teaching: Demystifying Modes with fabulous Canadian Piano Repertoire
The study of ancient modes is a fascinating and even mystifying topic. It is easy to get excited about modes when they are presented in a ‘user friendly’ approach. Using real music – from pop to jazz and even heavy metal – makes the study of modes not only interesting but a ‘cool’ thing to do!
The Demystifying Modes workshop provides suggestions and approaches to teaching modes through learning styles and natural processes. Students need to be able to connect these new (to them) sounds through a ‘teaching from the known to the unknown’ approach – associating sounds, patterns and feelings to what they already know and understand.
This workshop offers many pedagogical ideas for teaching, understanding, improvising, composing and piano performance with modes.
