Modal Improvisation and Creative Composition with Justin Gray & Synthesis - Markham, ON

Justin Gray is a bassist, composer, producer, and educator based in Toronto. Justin's world music ensemble Synthesis plays original compositions that creatively combine Indian classical melodies with western harmony, form, and grooves.

In this workshop, Justin Gray & Synthesis will demonstrate and discuss creative approaches to modal improvisation. These melodic and rhythmic approaches will be inspired by Indian classical and jazz concepts but will be applicable to any musical style. Justin will also share some insights into his creative composition process, with hopes of exploring new approaches helpful to both new and experienced composers.

Justin Gray & Synthesis is composed of Justin Gray (bass veena and electric bass), Ted Quinlan (guitar), Drew Jurecka (violin), Derek Gray (drums), and Ed Hanley (tabla).
