Beginner Ukulele with Peter Davison

This clinic will offer information about the types of ukuleles, basic techniques, care and maintenance, and a performance by Peter Davison. Pete is currently teaching at the Long & McQuade Lesson Centre and has a Bachelor of Arts with Music from St Francis Xavier University. Pete has been teaching music since 1996, has played drums, bass, and guitar in a variety of local bands, and won the 2010 Canadian Boss Loop Station championship. Bring your own ukulele if you have one!

Bodhrán 101 with Roger Stone 

Widely regarded as the heartbeat of Irish music, the bodhrán (pronounced “bow-rahn”) is a simple skin covered frame drum often described as the throbbing pulse or driving rhythmic force behind the traditional melodies. Multi-instrumentalist Roger Stone will be discussing the history of this drum as well as addressing fundamentals such as care and maintenance, techniques and timing, and will be aimed at the novice to intermediate level player. Roger is no stranger to the stage with over 30 years of performance experience in Canada, the U.S., and the Middle East. Bring your own bodhran if you have one!

Covering effective practicing and groove building, Patrick will be breaking down a simple practice method for growing your independence and giving you freedom when playing any kind of groove. He will also explore specific practice techniques to accomplish your technical goals.

Ukulele Blues for Beginners with Manitoba Hal

Using the chords C, F, and G7, beginners are guided through a basic 12-bar blues progression, including shuffle strumming patterns and the turnaround. Play through the entire workshop while learning theory as it applies to the blues and the ukulele. Players only need to know those three chords and have a basic ability with strumming and changing chords. Bring your own ukulele or borrow one of ours!

Saxophone Improvisation with Kirk MacDonald

Join Juno award winning saxophonist and composer Kirk MacDonald as he focuses on all aspects of playing the saxophone as it relates to improvisation, ensemble playing, sound production, technique, repertoire and musicality. Kirk will also discuss practice tips and equipment. Bring your horn along to practice the tips from one of Canada’s finest jazz saxophonists. There will be a product trial period to close the session featuring the TM Custom Tenor Saxophones, necks and mouthpieces and D’Addario woodwinds reeds. Kirk will be accompanied at this workshop by the legendary Harold Maybern on piano.

Slide Guitar with John Campbelljohn

Explore the many facets of guitar playing with an emphasis on slide guitar, open tunings, with easy-to-learn and new challenging techniques. Who were the pioneers? And who are today’s innovators? These are just two of the many questions that will be answered throughout the workshop. If moved by the blues – the fundamental influence of rock, pop, and country music – this guitar workshop will certainly motivate and encourage any participant.
