Brent will be discussing the importance of having a proper practice routine, setting achievable goals as a drummer, as well as how to be creative while practicing.  He will also discuss and demonstrate how to come up with great solo ideas! Brent has over twenty years of playing experience and has shared the stage with many popular performers including Jann Arden, Bif Naked, Brad Paisley and Rascal Flatts.

During Sam’s Technique and Tone clinic he will be demonstrating how to play with authority. We’ve all heard the saying Tone Is In The Fingers... Sam is excited to share some insight on how to get great tone using various techniques. English guitar virtuoso Sam Coulson is currently playing for the chart topping progressive rock band ASIA. Sam has played with and worked along side Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan, Tony MacAlpine and Walter Trout to name a few.

Ryan will be discussing practical use of gear, stage professionalism and soloing improvisation both independently and with others. Ryan Davidson is a freelance session guitarist, Fender endorser and has been recording and performing professionally for over 20 years. He holds a Masters of Music in Jazz performance degree, and has two Grammy nominations, 4 CCMA nominations for “Guitarist of the Year” including two wins of the award in 2012 and 2015!

Intro to Band Instrument Cleaning and Maintenance with Matt Ferguson

Matt will be covering the basics of both cleaning and general maintenance of common band instruments like the trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet, sax, tuba, and horns. You will learn the how to’s of part removal and cleaning, types of products to use and which ones to avoid, safe handling of delicate parts and what you can clean yourself versus what should be done by a professional. Matt Ferguson is a Long and McQuade employee in the band department, has being playing euphonium for over 15 years and holds a degree in Music Performance.

What actually makes a great mix? How do you ensure what you’re hearing in the studio will translate to the outside world? In this clinic, Spencer will be discussing his take on mixing techniques/philosophies that help to shape an emotionally moving mix - something your audience can connect with that will translate no matter what the playback system is. Spencer is an award winning Mixer/Producer/Engineer who’s work has been nominated for multiple JUNO, WCMA, and CCMA awards. In addition to this, his work has also contributed to multi-platinum, platinum and gold status albums/singles around the world.

Drum Recording 101 with Josh Rob Gwilliam

Drums are the foundation of every song you hear. It’s what will lift the song and get people to tap their feet. Selecting the right microphone and placing it correctly is important to the sound of your recording, and so is the room you’re recording in. Along with one of Alberta’s finest session drummers, we will look at proper microphone selection and technique. We will fully mic up a kit and practice various miking techniques to get the best out of your recordings. You will learn how to really make drums pop!

Playing with a pair of wire brushes is often a misunderstood and lost art form for today’s drummers. Come learn about many basic techniques and discover the musical potential of playing with the brushes. Many important patterns and concepts will be discussed and demonstrated, both in the context of jazz timekeeping and soloing skills. This session will review several key concepts from last year’s successful clinic and will also introduce new concepts to practice and explore.

Join Roland for a special presentation of the new synthesizers that were on display at NAMM 2016. Jacob will be discussing and demonstrating the SYSTEM-500, A-01K, and JUNO-DS. Jacob Watters is the Synth/DJ Product Specialist for Roland Canada. He enjoys exploring the sonic possibilities of new and innovative synthesizers. He is the program director for an online streaming radio station that helps to promote amateur electronic musicians and also organizes the Toronto Synth Meetup.
