Ukulele Workshop with Music Educator Mike Diabo         

Mike Diabo plays Jazz & Surf ukulele.   He plays standards & not so standards from Jerome Kearns & Duke Ellington to Thelonius Monk & Ornette Coleman. Inspired by Lyle Ritz, Bill Tapia & Tiny Tim, Mike has been turning the once again popular ukulele into a 4-string surf & swing machine, showing audiences at his solo shows what is possible with 4 strings and 2 octaves. Mike's workshop will focus on techniques to get any beginner and beyond-beginner to the next level.  The session will include strumming patterns, and single note work.

Cat will take you through various bass setups, ranging from home practice to live performing rigs. Topics discussed will include speaker configurations, power requirements, tone shaping, stylistic approach, bass effects pedals and getting the most out of your rig.

It's Never Too Late! Getting into Band and Ensemble Playing as an Adult Beginner with Stephanie McKeown

As a former public school system educator, current conductor of the "Second Chances" community band and staple of the Halifax band department, Stephanie will discuss:
• Overcoming the fear of learning as an adult beginner
• Choosing the right instrument
• Getting engaged in a fun, no pressure playing environment with like minded individuals
• Basic insight into brass, woodwind and auxiliary percussion

Beginner Ukulele with Peter Davison

The name Ukulele means “the gift that came here” - from the Hawaiian words uku (gift or reward) and lele (to come) - so we invite you to "come here" for the "gift" of instruction on this traditional Hawaiian instrument. This clinic will feature a performance by Peter Davison (from our Lesson Centre), and instruction on the history and types of ukuleles, the parts, tuning, simple chords, easy songs, strumming patterns and maintenance of the instrument. Bring your own ukulele if you have one!

Guitar Maintenance with Doug Sampson

Doug will be addressing fundamentals such as guitar stringing, working with locking tremolo systems, string gauges, set-up and intonation. He will also discuss environmental impacts on the guitar, including telltale signs of dryness through the winter months, the effects of home heating and various approaches to humidification.
