Recording 101 with Craig Learmont

Since starting his home based studio, MuzikHaus Records, in 1996, Craig has established himself as a trusted resource in the Canadian recording industry. With over 150 records to his credit, this award winning producer will share his thoughts on what today’s musician needs to consider when purchasing equipment. He will also discuss various aspects of recording such as: Hardware, Software, Preproduction, Tracking, Editing, Mixing and Mastering. Craig was an adjunct faculty member of Prairie Bible College’s Fine Arts Department and taught recording, sound reinforcement and video editing classes from 2002 to 2006.

Do you need a P.A. system for an upcoming wedding, party, or event? The thought of setting up a microphone and speakers needn’t be a stressful one for you. Long & McQuade staff member Gavin Jones and Yorkville Sound rep Boh Woodward will be taking you through a basic guide for the novice P.A. user. They will try to answer the most commonly asked questions about P.A. systems, keeping the technical jargon to a minimum. This will include:
• Speakers: powered or passive?
• What are the differences between microphones? (Wireless, corded, handheld and lavalier)
• What does an equalizer do?
• Mixers: Gain, effects & output
• How to use effects
• Subwoofers
• Setup & safety (Now that I know about the separate components, how do I hook them all together correctly?)

Songwriting with Jonathan Ferguson

Jonathan is a Calgary-based singer/songwriter and the lead singer for the band Long Jon Lev. A songwriter in the storytelling and character-based writing tradition of greats like Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel, Jonathan will discuss:
• How to approach a song as a story, and the appeal of the storytelling method to the listener
• Finding an approach to writing that allows you to connect with your audience
• How to approach writing an album as a cohesive whole, rather than a "collection of songs"
• Writer’s block

The Art of Brush Playing with Jon McCaslin

Playing with wire brushes is an often misunderstood and almost lost art form for today’s drummers. Come learn about many basic techniques and discover the musical potential of playing with brushes. Important patterns and concepts will be discussed and demonstrated, both in the context of jazz timekeeping and soloing skills. Recognized as one of Western Canada’s leading jazz drummers and educators, Jon brings his passion for the jazz tradition and its future to the bandstand and to the classroom.

Field Recording 101 with Josh Rob Gwilliam

Known for taking the best of traditional techniques and integrating them with modern technology, Josh began his career as a producer and engineer in 2001, working with such acts as the Road Hammers and George Canyon. He has since pursued his passion in searching for unique environments, and you're now more likely to find him taking artists out of the studio and recording in these unusual settings. Whether it’s in the forest or an old church, his goal is always to capture music in a natural environment. Currently chief engineer at OCL Studio in Calgary, Gwilliam will discuss:
• Working and setting up in unusual environments    
• How to best capture and use the surroundings at your disposal
• Microphone selection and set up       
• Compression and dynamics theory        
• EQ & studio tricks & techniques

Many people put forward parts of themselves and their singing voices that they think others like. But this doesn’t allow them to stand out authentically with their own unique sound and style. Tamara will discuss how to  find those unique ‘it factors’ and further draw them out in your voice, live performance and songwriting and music production. Tamara is an internationally renowned author and consultant who has 22 years of experience as a singing teacher and voice coach, and has appeared on NBC‘s The Voice.

DJ and producer Scotty Fernley (A.K.A. Dj AmbiDeckStress) has been involved with digital music for 10 years and counting. With a strong Dj background, he is now settling more into the music production aspect. In this clinic, he will discuss:
• Reason basics: Introduction to producing music with Reason   
• Understanding the rack system
• Insight into sampling and the use of different modules   
• How to use a midi controller with the program
• Basic beat production tips and techniques

Playing guitar since the age of 5, Jim has been involved in guitar repairs and sales since 1979. He now works at Long & McQuade.
