Session Musician Round Table with Russell Broom, Ryan Davidson, Chris Byrne and Chad Melchert

Hosted by four of the top session players in Alberta! 

  • Russell Broom:  Award-winning producer, songwriter and composer, Russell Broom is a Calgary based “music guy” who is well known for his guitar / writing / production / engineering work. He has worked on recordings for artists such as Jann Arden, Josh Groban, Chantal Kreviazuk, and many more. In his  workshop, Russell will talk about his unique approach to using the guitar live and in the recording studio, and how to create the  textures and sounds for which he is in demand.
  • Ryan Davidson:  Ryan is a freelance guitarist who has recorded and performed professionally for 20 years.  He holds a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas.  Ryan was the 2012 Canadian Country Music Association’s “Guitar Player of the Year” and has played on Grammy and Juno nominated albums.
  • Chris Byrne:  Chris has been The Road Hammers bass player since 2004. He is a Juno award winner and multiple CCMA winner, and has also played with George Canyon, Deric Ruttan and Gord Bamford.
  • Chad Melchert:  Chad is one of Canada’s most sought after live and session drummers. He has toured all over the world and played with artists of all genres. At the 2012 Canadian Country Music Awards, Chad was crowned CCMA Drummer Of The Year.

Jonathan is a Calgary-based singer/songwriter who has traveled across Canada and the world performing his uniquely intricate story songs, full of detail and driven by character and plot as though they were short films or novels. Discussing Drums with Andrzej Ryszka

With extensive background as both a touring drummer and an in-demand session player, Andrzej possesses a wealth of knowledge in the world of drumming. Beginning his career in Poland, he recorded a gold album with Krzak at the age of 20.  He eventually settled down in Canada where he has worked with Tom Jackson, The Roadhammers, Lisa Brokop, Jack Semple, Martha Reeves and more. He currently plays with the local band, Rustic Brothers.
Topics Andrzej will cover include:
• Life on the road with a band
• Being truthful to the style of music being performed
• Hearing protection and staying healthy
• Contributing to and creating a good working environment for yourself and your bandmates

An Introduction to Live Sound with Patrick Worsley

This clinic is for musicians who will be setting up the PA before they play, and for techs who will be sitting behind the mixer during the show. Learn to set-up and run a PA system for your band, church or private party. Be more confident with your knowledge of PA equipment and make yourself sound better. Pat will be demonstrating everything from hooking up the equipment, to mixing and how to use wireless mics. Pat has been playing drums and doing live sound for over 30 years. He also has extensive technical experience in speaker repair.

• DJ skills and techniques like cueing, scratching and mixing

Togetherness and Independence in Drumming with Jim Llewellyn

Many drummers concentrate on the concept of independence but forget the importance of playing together and being tight with themselves. Jim will discuss what it takes to make the drummer sound more like a cohesive unit. Jim has been playing professionally since the age of 15, and, while in the band Hammersmith, opened for everyone from KISS to Rod Stewart. A master of many musical styles, Jim is a lauded session player and local teacher.
