Who is Floyd Rose? with Allen Miller

Who is Floyd Rose?  Where does he live?  Who does he play with? Guitar players are invited to attend this informative and interactive clinic with their guitars. There is much mystery regarding the Floyd Rose tremolo system. This clinic will try to demystify the way the Floyd Rose tremolo operates and how to get the most from your Floyd equipped guitar. We will go through the string replacement process, doing basic  maintenance, installing new strings, tuning and adjustments. This is a clinic for beginner to  advanced guitarists. Allen has played guitar for 12 years and studied classical music at Memorial University. He plays in the band Weapon, has been teaching professionally for 10 years and is an instructor and tech with Long & McQuade.

Recording 101 with Ben Hamel 
  
This clinic is for anyone who is interested in getting into recording or for those who have some equipment and need a little help to get going. Topics will include:
•    How to set up a computer based home recording studio
•    Choosing your recording platform and recording software
•    Choosing your audio interface and how to set it up
•    Explanation of buffer size and sample rate
Ben plays bass and guitar, with his focus now being production of electronic music including recording, mixing and mastering. Ben is a product and rental specialist with Long & McQuade.

Band Instrument Repair and Maintenance with Noel Hand  
 
This clinic will cover some basic brass and woodwind tips. We will talk about common problems and their solutions including that “5 minute before the concert” repair. We will end off with questions about any maintenance or repair issues you may have. Noel  has been an instrument technician for 25 years and is a member of NAPBRIT.

Noel has completed thousands of band instrument repairs throughout Atlantic Canada.

Recording Solutions for the Guitarist with Lyle Crilly  
 
Roland Product Manager Lyle Crilly will cover everything the modern guitarist needs to know about recording, and discuss how to push the boundaries on developing a unique guitar sound.

Products that will be highlighted include the Sonar X1 Production Suite, which is a powerful software recording platform, and Roland's various audio interface options as well as the new and exciting V-Guitar system.

Acoustic Guitar Re-string, Set Up & Maintenance with Darren "Doc" Reid 
  
Guitar players are invited to attend this informational clinic with their guitar and strings. This is a clinic for beginner and more advanced guitar players. Doc will go through the string replacement process, doing basic maintenance, installing new strings, tuning and adjustments.

Doc has been doing guitar repairs for years. He designed prototypes for Garrisson Guitars, and currently plays in the band Effortless.

Fender Instruments with Shawn Crockard
   
Take a journey through the decades of history that make up the story behind Fender Musical Instruments in this presentation by Fender’s District Sales Manager for Atlantic Canada.

Shawn has worked in the wholesale side of the musical instrument and pro audio business since 1993, and has been spreading the Spirit of Rock ‘n’ Roll throughout Atlantic Canada on behalf of Fender Musical Instruments since 2007.

Button Accordion Clinic with Gerry Madden   

This clinic is for beginners and players with little playing experience. Button accordion players are invited to bring your accordion (and attend even if you don't have one yet!) Gerry will discuss basic operation of the instrument and how to get going. He will review some different playing styles and musical genres. Gerry has taught private and group button accordion for years. He is well-known as both a teacher and performer, and has played with many local artists. Gerry is an instructor with Long & McQuade.

MUSIC NL/NLAC/FACTOR  Funding Clinic with Jen Windsor & Katrina Rice   

Join Jen Windsor (MusicNL) and Katrina Rice (NL Arts Council) to get the latest information on how and where to get money from MusicNL/NLAC/FACTOR funding programs. Jen is Communication and Program Officer for the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MusicNL). She is also Regional Representative for the Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Recordings (FACTOR). She works with over 700 members in gathering funding for demos, albums, touring, showcasing and professional development.

Yamaha Band Instruments with Steve Bijakowski  
 
This is a clinic for beginners, educators, and more advanced band instrument players. Steve will discuss the many models of Yamaha instruments including new models being released. Steve is Yamaha's consultant for Winds, Strings and Percussion for Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

Steve has many years’ experience as a woodwind teacher, technician and in music retail.

Jazz Sax Improvisation with Natasha Hartery   

In this clinic, Natasha will focus on improvisation and the blues. Sax players are invited to bring in their own saxphones. We will be learning about the relationship between scales and chords, and how to use that relationship to create your own funky melodies. This clinic is geared toward wind instrumentalists, and players at the junior high/ senior high level, but all musicians and improvisers are welcome. Natasha has a Recording Arts diploma from CNA, a Performance degree from SFX and a Music Ed Degree from Memorial. She plays in Jazz, Blues, Musical Theatre, Classical and independent rock bands.

Introduction to Live Sound with Jeff Power 
  
This clinic is for musicians who will be setting up the PA before they play, and for techs who will be sitting behind the mixer during the show. Learn to set up and run a PA system for your band, church or private party. Be more confident with your knowledge of PA equipment and make yourself sound better. Jeff will be demonstrating everything from hooking up the equipment, to mixing and how to use wireless mics. Jeff has been playing bass and doing live sound mix for over 20 years. Jeff is a PA product and rental specialist at Long & McQuade.

Finger Picking Master Class with Darryl Chafe   

This is a clinic for beginners and more advanced guitar players. Guitarists are invited to attend this informative clinic with their guitar. Darryl will discuss dead thumb/rag blues;  Merle Travis/Chet Atkins styles; Banjo Rolls & Jerry Reed Style. He will explain Harp Harmonics, and the open tuning / capo – advantage. Darryl is a guitarist, teacher and arranger from Petty Harbour. His style is based on the thumb picking style made famous by Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. He is influenced by such greats as Sandy Morris, Jerry Reed, and Tommy Emmanuel. Darryl has been finger picking for 20 years and is an instructor at Long & McQuade.

Traynor Amps with Dave Reynolds   

This clinic is for any guitar enthusiast! Dave will tell the Traynor story from its beginnings to today, and current models and manufacturing techniques will also be discussed. Dave is Atlantic District Manager for Yorkville Sound distributing Traynor, Gibson, Yorkville, Apex and ART, to name a few.

Dave is a self-taught guitar player, who is gigging in 2 bands in the Halifax area and is a serious gear head.

ART/Apex with Dave Reynolds & Krisjan Leslie   

This clinic is for anyone interested in learning more about recording technology. ART (Applied Research Technology) products will be discussed in their application to recording and live sound. Discussions of the complete Apex microphone line and their application in recording and live sound will also be had. Dave is Atlantic District Manager for Yorkville Sound distributing Traynor, Gibson, Yorkville, Apex and ART, to name a few. Krisjan is a Juno nominated producer whose Lab of Kaos studio has recorded groups like The Once and Long Distance Runners. Krisjan is a recording and electronics product specialist at Long & McQuade.

This clinic is for any guitar enthusiast! Dave will tell the Gibson story from its beginnings up to today. Gibson company direction and philosophy will be discussed, including current model and manufacturing techniques.

Snare Drum Tune Up Clinic with Bob Davis

Having problems getting your snare drum to sound right? This is a clinic for beginners and more advanced drummers. Drummers are invited to attend this informative clinic with their snare drum and a head. We will go through the head replacement process, doing basic maintenance, tuning and muffling. We will review mic placement for live and studio work. Bob has been playing drums since he was 11 years old. He currently plays with One Night Stand. Bob is part of our Long & McQuade St. John's team.

Slide Guitar Master Class with Darryl Chafe   

This is a clinic for beginners and more advanced guitar players. Guitarists are invited to attend this informative clinic with their guitar. Darryl will discuss solo and accompaniment; lead playing and tips and tricks galore. He will explain open tunings vs standard tunings. Darryl is a guitarist, teacher and arranger from Petty Harbour. His style is based on the thumb picking style made famous by Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. He is influenced by such greats as Sandy Morris, Jerry Reed, and Tommy Emmanuel. Bass players are invited to attend this clinic with their instrument. Chris will discuss electric and double bass technique, as well as bass theory and concepts. This is a clinic for beginner and advanced players. Chris has been playing electric and double bass professionally since 2002. He studied at Humber College in Toronto and the Bass Collective in New York City, and is currently studying at Memorial. He is an in-demand sideman with many groups and has worked in the pit with local productions. Chris is a product and rental specialist at Long & McQuade.
