February 4th - Clarinet
Kornel Wolak

Already praised on two continents for his glorious tone, precise technical control and musical imagination, Kornel Wolak will show how he produces such magic from his clarinets. The clinic will include talk about correct technique, tone production, Duo/Trio and Quartet playing as well as discussions on mouthpieces and necessary accessories for your clarinet. Mr. Wolak will perform and demonstrate in conjunction with the clinic topics, a highlight to the event which is sure to confirm and exemplify his breathtaking tone and precise technical control. 

Feb 11th - Saxophone
AllSax4tet

Billed as 4 guys + 20 saxophones = mind-blowing music, this clinic is sure to amaze as the group covers musical styles from classical to jazz to pop/rock.
The Allsax4tet showcases the extraordinary talents of four of Canada’s most accomplished saxophonists. They play diverse musical styles on the full range of contrabass, bass, baritone, tenor, alto, soprano, sopranino and soprillo saxophones. Every performance is not only entertaining and fun, but also educational and challenging. Their expanding repertoire of original compositions highlights the musicianship and improvisation skills of these great saxophonists, as well as the range of their incredible collection of saxophones.

Feb 18th - Trumpet
Doc Severinsen

The great Mr. Doc Severinsen will honour us with a clinic at Long & McQuade. Doc is playing on the newly designed Shires Destino III trumpet, a horn that he had a hand in developing along with the S.E. Shires Company. After leading The Tonight Show band for 30 years, Doc has played and toured extensively as a performer with his Big Band, the San Miguel 5, and as a Shires artist and educator. Come and interact with one of the great trumpet virtuosos of our time!

Feb 25th  - Clarinet
Dr. J Cecilia Kang

Rico Performing Artist and Clinician, clarinetist Dr. Cecilia Kang has had a multi-faceted and globe-travelling career as a performer, educator and scholar. A graduate of the University of Michigan, the University of Southern California, the Royal Conservatory of Music, the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School of Music music programs, Cecilia has obtained a Doctorate of Musical Arts. Cecilia will be presenting a short performance and clinic at Long & McQuade, covering topics such as: reeds; reed and mouthpiece combinations; auditions; excerpts; pitch control; the evolution of the new Rico Reserve clarinet reeds, and will be answering questions from attendees.

March 3rd- Trombone
Barnaby Kerekes

Local musician Barnaby Kerekes will conduct a brass clinic, featuring the bass trombone. His interactive workshop topics will include the three basic parts of playing brass applicable for both beginners and pros alike:

  • Description and importance of breathing (interactive)
  • Importance of a stable embouchure, as an extension of breathing (interactive)
  • Making the right instrument / equipment choices for you now, and later.

*Please note that it is at the individual clinician's discretion to decide which parts of the clinic are interactive.
