Johnson is well-known among professsional musicians from his performance days in the 1950s, '60s and '70s with the Toronto Symphony, Toronto Philharmonic and Canadian Opera Company, as well as numerous CBC Television appearances. During that time, Johnson also became one of the busiest brass instructors in Canada, teaching from his own studios in downtown Toronto.  From 1973 to 1995 he was professor of trumpet and head of music at Humber College. Many of today's prominent brass players are former students of his.

Johnson's reputation across North America as a skilled diagnostician continues to keep him busy as a highly sought-after private instructor. He also performs in numerous brass ensembles and conducts several stage bands, as well as performing as soloist with many music ensembles in Ontario.
