SOCAN: Rights and Royalties Explained - Vancouver, BC

This free workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Copyright 101 -A brief explanation and history
  • SOCAN 101 - Who they are, what they do and how performing rights organizations work
  • New Initiatives at SOCAN
  • Royalties and licensing for music use
  • Music used in film/tv
  • Music Publishing
  • Brief explanation of other collective societies and the rights they represent
  • Creators’ rights issues and changing music business models – the good the bad and the ugly
  • Open forum – questions from the floor

Based in Vancouver, Terry O’Brien is Education and Outreach Manager (Membership Department - West Coast Division) for Canada’s Performing Rights Organization, SOCAN – the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada.
 
Terry has over thirty years experience in the music industry as a music publisher, composer, musician and recording artist, producer, consultant, teacher and in wholesale/retail music sales. 
 
Prior to joining SOCAN in 2000, Terry held the position of Vice President & General Manager of BMG Music Publishing Canada Inc., where he worked for ten years in their Toronto head office. After leaving BMG Canada in late 1997, Terry remained under contract to BMG Music Publishing U.S. as a consultant until 1999.
 
Terry is also currently on the Music BC Board of Directors.
 
As a musician, recording artist and performer, Terry has released five independent albums of ambient soundscapes under the artist moniker of Anomalous Disturbances.  He is also a member of the ambient- spacemusic group SADU.
