Acoustic Roots Guitar Workshop - Various Locations

Long & McQuade is pleased to support and host a series of workshops across the country with Big Dave McLean and Doc MacLean.

Taking place in cities nationwide, in conjunction with the National Steel “Century” Blues Tour 2009, this one-hour workshop will focus on resophonic, “dobro” or national style guitars, highlighting their use in a variety of ways. Fingerpicking in several blues styles, in different tunings and keys will be demonstrated and explained. Slide guitar styles will be demonstrated and contrasted. Equipment, accessories and set up will be discussed. The history of the instruments, and of the music, will be touched on. The workshop will be a flexible, interactive session, aiming to satisfy the interests and skill levels of the attendees— whether beginners or advanced players.

This is also an opportunity to meet the artists in a relaxed setting. The National Steel Blues Tour has been the most comprehensive touring show in Canada for several years. Here’s a chance to ask about how this is done, and what it’s really like on the Big Road.

Big Dave McLean is a Juno winning, Stony Plain recording artist based in Winnipeg. His new acoustic release, Got ‘em From the Bottom, is a 2009 WCMA nominated "Blues Recording of the Year," and was Juno nominated "Blues Album of the Year." Big Dave was Maple Blues Nominated "Acoustic Artist of the Year" for the last two years, and this year was also nominated for "Entertainer of the Year." Last year he won the "Lifetime Achievement Award." Dave’s song “Muddy Waters For President” was recently selected as one of the Top 100 Canadian Songs to be presented to U.S. President Obama.

Doc MacLean was recognized as "Acoustic Blues Master" at last year's Black American Music Awards. He's got a bunch of new songs you won't want to miss. "An audio version of the movie, Sin City," said Blues Revue. "The Master of Darkness." His coast to coast fanbase will make the Century Tour a great success and a wild adventure. A long time resident of the southern States, Doc recorded for the Chicago based label Flying Fish, and played with many of the first generation greats. Doc now hangs his hat in Toronto.
