Long & McQuade and Conservatory Canada Present Tony Caramia

Last year, Tony was so impressed by Conservatory Canada's Contemporary Idioms piano syllabus that he wanted to help endorse the program. We are very fortunate to have him return again this year as a part of the CC team and share with us his ideas on how to teach contemporary styles using this syllabus.

Workshop:   Teaching Teachers!  Introducing Contemporary Idioms in the Piano Studio

Join us for this informative hands-on piano workshop demonstrating teaching techniques for contempoary styles of music such as swing, blues, rock, etc.  Tony will offer tips on how to introduce this new curriculum into your studio and give your students the tools they will need to succeed in Contemporary Idioms piano examinations.  He will also give advice on teaching improvisation skills and working with lead sheets.  Tony's basic pedagogical approaches to proper performance practices will help your students excel in modern musical genres.

"Students require basic skills to play the standard repertoire but don't always have the time or interest necessary to develop those skills completely or even sufficiently. Contemporary teaching literature - be it blues or swing or a ballad - can introduce and build those skills admirably, and strengthen the students' appreciation for all kinds of musical styles. Conservatory Canada's Contemporary Idioms Syllabus does just that.

I was genuinely impressed by its depth and breadth, by its thorough approach to creating a musician, not just a piano student. The variety of the composers and the appeal of their music is unprecedented - contemporary teachers and students are the richer for this marvelous pedagogical tract.

I am thrilled to become a part of this extraordinary musical adventure."

-Tony Caramia, Professor of Piano, Eastman School of Music
