Long & McQuade is pleased to welcome back SOCAN's Terry O'Brien in this free seminar that discusses the ins and outs of the music business in Canada.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Copyright 101 - A brief explanation and history.
  • SOCAN 101 who they are, what they do and how performing rights organizations work

  • Music use in Film/TV
  • Music Publishing
  • Brief explanation of other collective societies and the rights they represent
  • Creators' rights issues and changing music business models

Based in Vancouver, Terry O’Brien is Education and Outreach Manager (Membership Department - West Coast Division) for Canada’s Performing Rights Organization, SOCAN the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada.

Terry has over thirty years' experience in the music industry as a music publisher, composer, musician and recording artist, producer, consultant, teacher and in wholesale/retail music sales.

Prior to joining SOCAN in 2000, Terry held the position of Vice President & General Manager of BMG Music Publishing Canada Inc., where he worked for ten years in their Toronto head office. After leaving BMG Canada in late 1997, Terry remained under contract to BMG Music Publishing U.S. as a consultant until 1999.

During his time at BMG, Terry was a Director of the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA), BMG Ricordi Canada and an Executive Board Member of the Canadian Music Publishers Association (CMPA).

Terry served twice as a judge for the Juno Awards and as a FACTOR Super Jury judge. He has participated in seminars, workshops and conference panels for SOCAN, Canadian Music Week, New Music West, North by Northeast, Music BC, Alberta Music, Sask Music, New Forms Festival, Western Canadian Music Week, Winter Music Conference, Canadian Country Music Week, Songwriter’s Association of Canada, Long & McQuade and others.

As a musician, recording artist and performer, Terry has released three independent CDs of ambient soundscapes under the artist moniker of Anomalous Disturbances. He is also a member of the ambient- spacemusic group SADU.
