French Horn Clinic with Patricia Evans, Principal Horn WSO

If you teach Horn as an educator or are an aspiring French Hornist, this is a clinic you do not want to miss. Patricia Evans has been Principal Horn of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra since 2002.

A native of Northern Vermont, she began her studies on the horn at the age of 10. Patricia went on to study at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and at McGill University in Montreal. She participated in the long term residence program at the Banff Centre before being awarded a fellowship with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. Since coming to Winnipeg, Patricia has been invited to play with some of the top orchestras in North America, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. She is a frequent soloist with the WSO and was a featured soloist at the 2006 Northeast Horn Workshop. Patricia has performed with the Winnipeg Chamber Music Society, Groundswell, and is also Principal Horn of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.

Life as an Indie Artist with Cara Luft
Strumming since the age of four and singing since she can remember, alt-roots artist Cara Luft brings an ease and grace to the stage seldom seen in this age of fast fame and virtual presence.

In 2002, Cara joined forces with two other female artists to form the Wailin' Jennys. Along with a third of the songwriting duties, she was the instrumental anchor and a major contributor to their renowned vocal harmony arrangements. She earned the epithet "Jenny Van Halen," being known as much for her vibrant comical demeanor as for her powerful guitar playing. Two Jennys' albums resulted, the second of which, 40 Days, was awarded a Juno Award for Best Roots Album (Group) in 2005.

Her decision to follow her own muse was taken when she found a need to honour her core sensibilities, craving honest, deep music, lyrics with integrity; music with edge, grit, groove and spellbinding vocals. Her latest release, The Light Fantastic, is a testament to this difficult choice and is receiving strong critical praise and listener response. The album became the #3 Roots Album for 2007 on the Earshot college/community radio chart (Canada) and earned myriad award nominations.

Don’t miss this intimate clinic, that will offer a window into the life of an independent musician.

Arranging Clinic with Ron Paley
Pianist, electric bassist and composer, Ron Paley formed the Ron Paley Big Band in 1976 after playing with the big bands of Buddy Rich and Woody Herman, with whom he recorded two CD’s and played on a Frank Sinatra album. He has recorded two big band albums, one trio album, and is completing work on a big band musical.

The big band has performed in concert with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and played a concert of “new music” sponsored by Winnipeg’s new music concert organization, “Groundswell”. In 2002, Ron was commissioned by the Royal Canadian College of Organists to compose a work for choir and organ based on the text of Psalm 122. This was followed by a commission from the National Arts Centre to write a fanfare for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for the Royal Visit. In 2004, the big band performed and toured with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, playing jazz arrangements of songs by Rogers and Hart for A Cinderella Story. In 2007, Ron was commissioned by the Winnipeg Singers to write a choral work using the text of 3 of Shakespeare's sonnets.
