James Kumaran’s musical journey began at a young age, studying classical voice, piano and french horn. After playing drums for a high school musical production, James decided to dedicate himself to the instrument and performed with the Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra for its first two years. He was also a key player in his high school jazz band and musical theatre troupe.
Taking his talents to Edmonton, Kumaran began an undergraduate degree in Jazz and Contemporary music at MacEwan University. While a student, he participated in a wide variety of musical opportunities both in and outside of school. These ranged in genre from fusion to rock, metal to reggae, jazz to pop, and many more.
James has formed and led two bands, Midnight Arrival and Noise Pending. As a studio session player, Kumaran played on several albums including “wondering” by Dane Bjornson, and “Burn out” By Lexene. While in his fourth year of his degree, James played for the MacEwan big band, the universities flagship professional ensemble.
Since being back in Saskatoon, Kumaran has been a guest artist with the Saskatoon Brass Band, the Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra, and he recently played drums on a special project for the University of Saskatchewan. It’s easy to find James at local music events, public and private and he is excited to share his love of drums with Long & McQuade students.
