All the demos on youtube don't do this justice because none of the speakers are broken in yet in those vids.. if you listen to demos of the 50 head you can hear the sound though. Sounds incredible, it's got the plexi sound at volumes that make sense. Just put the master at 7, and the other knobs to taste and you're set. If you don't put the master into that zone it will not sound like an oldschool marshall, just like the old NMV marshalls that people modded MVs into. Having a master volume does give it a lot of flexibility to be used for other sounds though so it's definitely a bonus. Same with the loop - it's pointless to use it if you crank the amp cause you might as well just run everything into the front when the power tubes are distorting, but if you run it with a clean(ish) power section that loop is real nice to have. The low power modes on the amp are good, but the nature of the beast when you're cranking an amp is that you can't fine tune the volume so even having 3 settings is not always enough. You really need a knob to control that volume but you can't get that without using an attenuator, which I do recommend with any classic rock voiced amp so you can put it exactly where it needs to be in the mix without sacrificing tone. I use a weber mass 200 with my amps if you're looking for suggestions, they're awesome and super versatile. Get the footswitch!

I decided to upgrade to the Origin after 23 years using a budget Marshall solid-state amp. I read and watched lots of reviews and decided on the Origin 50W combo. So far, so incredible. My wheelhouse is classic rock, and this amp delivers. The tone is unreal. Playing Hendrix on a Strat, it sounds like Hendrix (other than my own playing limitations, of course). But my Les Paul sounds exceptional as well. I keep it on the "Low" setting for home use, but it's still really loud. And when the master volume is all the way up, it growls in the best possible way.
The lack of an additional channel to be able to easily switch from clean to gain isn't ideal, but it's not a deal breaker--the gain boost footswitch makes a bit of a difference, and you can always pedal your gain/distortion in any event. Some people might also be bothered by the lack of in-amp reverb, but as someone who thinks reverb tends to be overused, it doesn't bother me.
Very happy I made the upgrade and didn't break the bank in the process!

I usually wait for a bit to write my review of gear. I may follow this up. First off I gave it 5 for features because I was looking for the simplest circuit and this added 2 things I didn't want but love having. A pull switch on the gain knob that pushes the amp harder and the tilt control that allows me to change the tonality of the amp darker or brighter in a way that has a lesser affect on the bass and treble. I love the power selector but that was a feature I was looking for. The sound is amazing. I cannot tell you how many years I have been looking for this exact sound but always turned away from Marshall because I didn't think they fit the country rock I play, I gravitated to Fender and Traynor and gravitated away from hard rock. But does it all. Country twang and 70's rock crunch to early metal tones. I am inspired. It is built like a tank. It has no reverb but for me I like Plate reverb for rock so I prefer a pedal anyway. But it does come with a footswitch that allows you to boost the amp and shut off the effects loop so the verb trem and delay are in the loop. The amp is very sensitive. You don't have adjust anything push it just pick harder or softer. For pedal junkies like me this amp really notices pedals and all the wire. Use the effects loop. I found that 4 pedal and 2 10' cord was max before the amp lost its sound. So overall this is everything I have been looking for and I also think it is going to make me more of a minimalist.

I owned a real 50 watt late 60's PLEXI. I bought it in 71 and kept it for years. I had to sell it for money to get back to Canada after living in Brit for years. The difference in the sound of that amp and this is insignificant. One thing about a Plexi it was cool in the 60's and still is. It is not going to go out of date and disappear in favour of next years and improved whatever. LOL A bullet proof sound!!!

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
