The next generation of the Marshall DSL series amps are laden with Marshall tone, features and functionality for the novice, as well as pros performing on the world's biggest stages. The new DSL models feature adjustable power settings, which delivers all-valve tone and feel, at any volume, from bedroom to stage. The new technology adjusts power to the valves, instead of just turning off valve stages, allowing the amp to remain articulate and dynamic.

Some innovative tweaks to the EQ circuitry have given the new DSLs even greater tonal flexibility. The EQ section of the new DSLs can deliver exactly what your ears are looking for.

Marshall's partnership with Softube has led to the creation of award-winning plug-ins, as well as exceptional tone in Marshall's CODE digital amps. The same team is responsible for the development of the new emulated output feature, found in the DSL series. Both the headphone out, and line out on the DSL models boast incredibly accurate emulation of the famed 1960 cabinet.

The DSL is now more versatile than ever, with new features including discrete master volume controls for each channel, built-in reverb and resonance controls.

Features:

• Gain and volume per channel
• Dedicated resonance control
• Celestion Seventy-80 speaker
• High and low power settings
• Reverb
• Softube emulated output
• 3 x ECC83 and 2 X EL34 valves
• Dimensions (W x H x D): 19.7 x 16.5 x 9.8 inches (500 x 420 x 250mm)
• Weight: 35.9 lbs (16.3 kg)

I have had many Marshall amps over the years and this one replaces an aging Marshall AVT50. I didn't need the 50 watts so I downsized to 20 watts, but this amp runs at either 10 or 20 watts and I run it a 10 with lots of headroom. Great clean sound and a effects loop. Plus classic Marshall on the Ultra Gain channel. A 12" Celestion speaker rounds out the package. Get one while they are priced reasonably.

This is a pretty decent tube amplifier when you consider the price point, sharing the eq between the two channels isn't great but if you play around with it you can find the common ground between the two channels. The clean channel is much better than high gain channel for most types of music, but again can get some use out of the high gain channel. Plenty of power on 20watt setting to keep up with rest of band. The big weaknesses with this amp is the speaker and the reverb, replacement of speaker to Celestion vintage 30 massive improvement and using a reverb unit in the effects loop makes this amp really come to life.

Takes pedals great, the reverb on it adds a lot, both clean and drive channels sound great even without pedals. I played it once in front of an audience and it filled the room with bell like chime. It is the best tube amp I've ever had.

For a 20 watt amp this thing really pushes out a lot of sound (or in my case...noise) and with the partially closed back it has lots of low end too. I highly recommend trying one of these out, I often use this instead of the stack and with the low power setting you can crank it to get the tube saturation without your ears ringing for the rest of the day. Excellent amp and would be $2000.00 if it was made in the UK and probably worth it.

It sounds great at bedroom volumes and gigs. I feel like the gain doesn't compliment one of my guitars though but it takes pedals nicely which takes it too a whole new level. The cleans are beautiful as well. Love that Marshall tone.

I originally had a DSL40 and thought it was a great amp, especially if you upgrade the speaker, which I did to a Celestion Vintage 30.The bass is clearer and tighter. Since moving into an apartment, its just too loud. I tried the DSL15 combo that was available at the time. I could manage the volume better but the Marshall tone wasn't in that due to the power tubes being 6V6s, not EL34s so I exchanged it back for the DSL40. Then time goes by despite having a loud amp that I could barely crank. I ran it a half power too. I then saw months ago on Marshall's website that the new improved DSL series was out, not just with the DSL40CR but the 20W amp caught my eye as it had EL34 tubes. Just had to try it. Compared to the DSL40, it oddly sounded better. I could turn it up a little more and the sound was clearer. My older amp actually sounded harsh even with the same settings. So the choice was made and I took the Vintage 30 speaker out of the old amp and put it in the new one and it sounds even better. Amazing little amp.

Brought it home and notices a noise at idle not a hiss, the best way to describe it is a "windy microphone" noise. Took it back got another same thing. Marshall says they have a fix if you return the amp to them. Beyond that i found the amp to be bright and spikey sounding. The OD channel is good and the clean channel is missing the crunch button. Its light weight and built well but did not like the overall voice of the amp. I returned it and bought the DSL40cr and i am much happier now. It's well worth the extra few bucks as you get a better voiced and much more versatile amp.

Just a note that when I review something, I review it for it's price class. I'm not scoring it against a $2000 head on a 4 x 12 cabinet played on a acreage where you can get 8 tubes warmed up. :) I researched amps up to about the $1000 mark and a little beyond for several months before buying this. I first used youtube to listen to the different power tube types, and my preference were the EL34's. That narrowed things down a great deal. I wanted and amp that was 20 watts or more, but had to have volume attenuation so I could using it safely at home, and the field got narrower. I wanted to play the amp first, and deal locally. This is a very fast amp to dial into. Hit gain and volume to get desired level of crunch, a couple of EQ tweaks, verb... and your there in less than 5 minutes. Humbucking light crunch to heavy crunch is all excellent. Single coil blues and hard classic rock is superb. Shredders .... not sure.. I don't shred so I wont comment. In it's class, great tube sound and if you have a PA system and a quality FX setup, you'll probably never need more.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
