The classic 81/85 combo has been around for decades and is still EMGs best pickups. I bought a set thirty years ago, the 81 with two single coils to drop in a Strat. QUIET! Not a Strat anymore but when I bought the 81/85 set in the Gibson Custom Shop ZW years ago it simple blew me away. You can put so much gain on them that they will not get noisy. They sound thick, full and loud. There is a noticeably scooped midrange and less treble but its all about the metal and thats all that counts.Just add an Ibanez Tube Screamer to a heavily distorted tone to add alittle focus then look out So blues, jazz and country players can get lost unless they know how to adjust EQ.

I installed these into my Les Paul DIY guitar, not that there was anything wrong with the pickups that came with it, for something different and...WOW they kick butt! I’m loving the sound I get! Thanks EMG.

Used to own the Zakk Gibson. Guitar was very heavy with a fast neck and these pickups were great but didn't seem to surpass your usual EMG's too much. They did seem a bit clearer.

This set of EMG's really brought the sound of my Epiphone Les Paul Studio Goth out of the gutter. I'm using a Fender Mustang IV ver.1 and compared to the stock pickups in my Ibanez RG series and artcore the Epiphone was sounding really fuzzy and harsh. Now I'm rocking it out as my daily banger. The sounds are really bright and nice, the sustain is excellent. When you turn the gain and the distortion up, it really screams. I'm really happy with this purchase and would recommend these to anyone wanting to upgrade their starter guitar.

Honestly can't understand why people hate on EMG's. They are a bit of a niche market but I built my own guitar last year and through these in this because I play metal and just wanted to try them out. I was BLOWN away. These pickups shine when playing clean all the way to heavy distortion. I use these in jazz band and when my teacher saw me show up with a flying v he said "You plan to play jazz on THAT?!" after rehearsal he told me how amazing it sounded! Versatile, clear tone and will never let you down. Get em. Also solder free installation is quick and painless.

these pickups are awesome even tho i do agree with many people that they do make every guitar sound the same-ish depends on the guitar i had 2 guitars with emg 81/85 the zakk wylde combo and one sounded different than the other both professionally put it by guitar techs and the sound difference I believe is in the type of wood the guitar is made from.i have them in my razorback and they sound pretty good minus i cant change the tone because i have the afterburner in the guitar aswell
