Currently, we are seeing an explosion of young contemporary guitarists pushing their playing techniques into exciting new directions. We are viewing this trend as the beginning of a third phase of guitar playing. All at Ibanez have challenged themselves as guitar designers to step up and answer the needs of this third phase.

In launching the AZ series, the goal was not to merely create a completely new guitar model, but to sculpt a great guitar that can foster the potential of the modern ?third phase' while maintaining traditional elements. Even though Ibanez is thought of as a modern guitar brand, it has decades of accumulated knowledge and a history of pushing the boundaries. The AZ series carries with it all of the hallmarks of these tried and tested Ibanez qualities. The harmonic balance between bridge and pickups, nut and machine heads, neck and fret material all work together in order to help the guitarist create their desired sound. From A to Z, there is no aspect of guitar making that we ever overlook. This tradition has been passed down masterfully to the AZ series.

AZ Modern Oval C S-TECH WOOD® roasted maple 1pc neck
S-TECH treated Maple is used for the AZ's neck construction. This is the first time it has ever been used in a guitar neck construction. Its nitrogen-heating-treatment increases the wood's stability, durability, water resistance and tolerance of temperature changes. After extensive prototyping and trials, we concluded that 20.5mm thickness at the 1st fret and 22.5mm at the 12th fret is the optimal neck thickness for this process. The neck is sealed with an oil finish (sealer coat) which helps make it feel similar to a well-played guitar neck.

Neck Grip
In order to achieve supreme neck grip comfort, The fretboard edge is finished with a smooth curve that extends from the border between the fretboard and the neck, and then to the surface of the fretboard. The detailed neck shape is precisely carved using a ball mill for ultimate consistency. The width measurements of the fretboard are at 42mm at the nut and 57mm at the last fret. These dimensions allow for an easy grip in the lower register, and a more modern feel in the higher register.

Body Design
A shallow body back contour and a big forearm contour make the guitar body fit the player naturally, thus increasing playing comfort. The AZ body has a deep waist and different radii on each body edge curve (3 mmR on body top/8 mmR on body back), making it easier to play in both standing or sitting positions.

Seymour Duncan® Hyperion Pickups
The custom pickup for the AZ was developed in collaboration with Seymour Duncan. The pickups feature a moderate output through Alnico-5 magnets to keep the clarity of the fundamental tone when using a distortion sound, and to deliver a clear pick attack. From treble to bass, and from high-E string to low-E string, the overall tonal balance is evenly adjusted, and works well with various effect pedals.

dyna-MIX 10 w/Alter switch
It offers ten sound variations, and can easily switch from humbucker and single coil modes with the mini switch. The power Tap mode provides a realistic single coil sound despite its two humbucker pickup layout.

Ibanez T1802 Tremolo Bridge (made by GOTOH® )
The new T1802 Bridge after a collaboration between GOTOH® and Ibanez. It features machined titanium saddles and a machined steel tremolo block for a quick response, thick lows and rich highs. The 10.5mm string spacing allows for easy picking across strings, including techniques such as string skipping and hybrid picking. The snap and hold tremolo arm socket can makes it easy to load a tremolo arm, and the arm torque adjuster enables fine torque adjustment without any tools. The 2-point floating tremolo system allows for a super smooth tremolo motion when either raising or lowering the pitch.

GOTOH H.A.P®-M machine heads
The AZ comes with GOTOH® MAGNUM LOCK® machine heads, which have an established reputation for tuning stability. Its H. A. P® (Height Adjustable Post). system allows for the adjustment of string posts for the appropriate tension of each string.

Product Experience   I own it
Closest Store   Edmonton North, Alberta
I followed this guitar ever since it was being prototyped in the progressive instrumental community, so as soon as it was announced in the run up to NAMM I knew I had to try one. Two were brought into L&M stores in Alberta neither unfortunately in my City. After missing the chance to try a premium model due to holiday hours in Calgary. I decided when next in Grande Prairie I would try the prestige. I probably should not have if I had any concern for my bank balance. Now that my rambling background story is over, the guitar. Immediately after picking up I knew I would have to leave the store with it. The tri fade burst is beautiful in person the photos do not do it justice. I originally had planned to try the guitar in GP and order the Blue one when I returned to Edmonton if I liked it. The guitar is possibly the most ergonomic and balanced super strat I have ever played. It is perfect to the touch, the light oil finish on the neck immediately feels worn in and comfortable. The board radius is closer to an American start than it is a typical wizard. The tall jumbo stainless steel frets are very responsive on the roasted maple board. This combo with the titanium saddles and milled steel block make for an incredibly snappy and resonate guitar unplugged. Plugged the SD Hyperion pickups are amazing. With the alder body it replicates the classic RG tones and when the alter switch is in the up position this thing will give you a fairly convincing Strat tone. I have been switching between my Bogner alchemist 112 for jamming and my Yamaha TRX10x for practice. She sounds incredible on both. Never really been huge on Seymour Duncan. As a ibanez fanboy I generally am team DiMarzio and even some of the more modern Duncan's I have had failed to hook me. Until now. Also worth mentioning is the Gotoh hardware onboard. The locking HAPm tuners are beyond cool with their torque locking pegs. I like how they add stability without the added head stock girth of traditional lockers. The T1802 trem is one of my favorite non locking bridges I have owned, excellent balance for flutters and dips. Will handle some aggressive dive bombing while returning to pitch. Hands down best guitar(for me) I have ever played. Of course this is matter of opinion and from someone without a background in boutique guitars. I am sure that to some one used to suhr or Tom Anderson this may not be a mind blowing a piece. I am mainly a collector of Japanese Ibanez and American Fender and this guitar captures my favorite attributes of these companies and makes what to me is truly a desert island guitar. It also does this at a fairly reasonable price considering the level of hardware and workmanship. Bottom line: If you have ever lost sleep trying to decide which guitar to pick up between a Prestige RG or a Deluxe/Elite Stratocaster, your suffering is over Buy a the AZ and live happily ever after.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
