Venova is Yamaha's new line of wind instruments that feature simple fingering similar to a recorder, while offering expressive power like the saxophone. As indicated by its name - combining "ventus", Latin for wind, and "nova", Latin for new - this instrument was developed with the aim of providing a new way to enjoy wind instrument performance.
The Venova is a lightweight and portable instrument with ABS resin body. This robust material choice means it is also water washable, making it easy to keep clean. And easy to take anywhere.
Unique Branched Pipe Design
The Venova sounds the way it does because of the unique "branched pipe" tube that's added to the body. This extra piece changes the tone from a cylindrical instrument (like a recorder) into the sound of a more conical instrument like a saxophone.
Meandering Pipe
The body of the Venova is bent into a "meandering pipe" structure. This shortens the distance between the tone holes and makes it possible to play all the notes with very few keys. The result is a simpler fingering system that's similar to a recorder and easier to learn even for people who've never played a wind instrument before.
Durable, Easy-to-Care-for Materials
The ABS resin body is durable and can be washed with water. In addition, the included mouthpiece, synthetic resin reed, and synthetic pads are also water-safe, so cleaning the Venova is easy.
Easy to Learn
The Venova Owner's Manual and the "Let's Play Venova!" guidebook include tips on posture, sound production, and controlling pitch and tone. The guidebook also contains sample songs to help you get started. Even if you're completely new to wind instruments you can have fun while learning.

Neat, nifty instrument for the price, Japanese ingenuity at its best. If you can't afford a soprano sax or oboe this is a decent substitute. Extended techniques such as multiphonics and glissandi are easy to execute, My only advice is to be careful when taking it out and putting it back in the case (or laying it down) as the keys are fragile and it sounds way better with an actual wooden reed rather than the plastic one that comes with it. I wish we had these in grade school rather than soprano recorders...

I recently received this instrument as a gift last year, and have been practicing in my spare time. I found that the synthetic resin reed that came with the instrument hard to play, so I purchased a package of Rico Soprano Saxophone 2.0 reeds, which work better for me. The accessories that come with the Venova are very good. Hal Leonard publishes a book "Venova Method" which is useful in learning to play the Venova. I downloaded and printed the Venova fingering chart from the Yamaha web site which is beneficial for learning the notes. A nice instrument if you are looking for a sound different from other wind instruments.

I bought this a year ago and I love it. I have never played a reed before but I soon got the hang of it.
It's super easy, I've just used recorder books for stuff to play.
I'm not a musician, I just play for fun- it's a "casual wind instrument", not a grand piano. For $100 you can't go wrong.

I got this instrument thinking it would be more like a recorder.. I was mistaken. This is a difficult instrument for a beginner, and there are no books online or music to learn.
If you already play reed instruments and want something cheap you can have fun with, this is for you. It does have more of a recorder sound than a sax which is also disappointing.
