The new ART ProMPA II is the next generation in affordable high performance microphone preamp technology. Each microphone input circuit, with selectable 48v phantom power, features variable input impedance which can radically vary the overall performance of any high quality dynamic or ribbon microphone. The ProMPA II can be configured for dual mono or stereo operation with selectable mid/side mic support, summing the adjacent channel, to decode left/right signals.

The ProMPA II can operate at either a low or high plate voltage on the two integrated hand-selected 12AX7 tubes for wider variation of preamp tone and performance. Large back-lit analog VU output meters display output levels while multi-colored LED arrays show tube gain.

Housed in a standard 2u space rack-mountable steel chassis, with CNC routed black anodized aluminum face panel, the ProMPA II is designed to deliver years of reliable operation in the studio, production facility, or on the road for live sound reinforcement.

Have been eyeballing one of these plus the PRO VLA compressor for 2 years to replace some 30 year old gear. Finally pulled the trigger on both. Love the MPA. Very clean and warm sounding. Great features. Can definitely hear the tube warmth. Bought this for vocals, acoustic guitars, guitar cabs and aux percussion. Sounds great on all, but here is the bonus................ I tried the High Z input on bass guitar just for fun and it sounds soooooo good !!! Coupled with the PRO VLA compressor, my bass sounds very fat and punchy. Again, can definitely hear the tube warmth. This will be my new go to method to record bass. For the money, you can't beat the value for both the PRO MPA and PRO VLA.

Well made with quality components. Sure, change the tubes if you want, but the stock tubes work fine, easily done if you want. Plug in headphones and mic, and use the MPA to dial in the sound and tube warm with an sm58 for example, and with +20 db switch and plus 18 or more on the dial gain, set the Output to zero - Impedance to match the mic - eg: 250 on the 58 really wakes up the mic, and listen for any noise in the phones. Basically zero noise floor. Sing and adjust dial gain to push the tubes more to get that sound. Now select High Plate Voltage and that alone with shape the sound again without increasing the noise floor. Plug the Output mic cable into the Audio Interface and now set the sensitivity or gain to record. When the mic is plugged directly into my Roland Octa Capture the Auto Sens will set the mic gain around 45 out of the max 50 to get a good fat track, there is a definite noise on the Roland Pre's. The hiss is there. Now plug the Output cable from the Art Pro into the Roland, and use Auto Sens, and the setting becomes about a 5 out of 50. Same full trace on the track - but the noise floor is ZERO. Dead quiet mic Pre's and the recorded track need little EQ or other processing. This unit is worth every nickel. Recording an acoustic guitar with Mid Side Matrix - another huge bonus.

After years of buying various preamps and compressors to try to achieve warm pleasant sound in a cold digital audio climate, this one delivers - with the high voltage tube preamp, you can drive it to natural warm tube compression and still retain clarity.

This preamp is slightly cleaner than my Allen & Heath GL2400-16 stock preamps, which I love. I got this to boost the quality going to my A&H ZED60-14 for portable recording (great combo). By the way, the stock 7025 tubes are great - all this review/forum chat about immediately swapping to Tungsol tubes is garbage - unless you want to degrade the quality.

I've had this preamp for over a year now and I'm very happy with it's creative possibilities, reliability, and flexibility. Two of the coolest features are it's stereo capability and the mid/side matrix configuration. Apart from those the metering is superb and the sound is silent, warm and accurate. I use this unit all the time to warm up my guitar and bass guitar signals, for all my condenser mics, and can't wait to use it with a ribbon mic to see how well it'll warm up that sound, too. Very cool preamp and very much worth it's weight in tubes and circuitry.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
