I bought this Strat because I liked the looked and I wanted Noiseless Pickups. The compound radius neck is wonderful and fits my hands perfectly. The tuners make changing strings very fast. The 5 additional pickup selector options are fantastic and I pretty well 'live' on them. Negatives - I use 11-48 strings and had to throw another spring in the whammy to balance(not included). Also, this guitar cost just below two grand with tax and the case candy could be a lot more quality. Just junk really. All in all, it is a wonderful piece and I highly recommend it.

Fender’s new American Deluxe Stratocaster Premium Ash has the distinctive grain pattern and spanking tone of an ash body. The compound radius fingerboard allows more advanced along the neck. New N3 Noiseless pickups provide improved Stratocaster tones for sparkling bell-like chime with no hum, and reconfigured S-1 switching offers more distinctive tonal options. Other features include staggered locking tuners, two-point synchronized American Deluxe tremolo bridge with pop-in arm, and beveled neck heel. I prefer a maple neck. My only rosewood neck guitar is the great Jeff Beck Signature Strat which is a whole other review. The thing that most people don’t realize is that premium ash will sound better with age compared to most guitars so getting a cheaper guitar now won’t be such a good investment as this guitar. This guitar sounds and looks great out of the box and will continue to do so for years to come. I use Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom Slinky Strings. These strings are a hybrid set for those who like thick bottom strings without sacrificing the ability to solo on smaller strings. The wound strings are made from nickel plated steel wire wrapped around a hex shaped steel core wire. The plain strings are made of specially tempered tin plated high carbon steel; producing a well balanced tone for the N3 pickups. Gauges .010 .013 .017 .030 .042 .052. I wish the SSS Ash Strat did not have string trees. The HSS model does not have string trees and is one less point of friction. However, products like Groove Lube can lessen the friction points. Having the guitar setup and intonated properly is important. You get a free intonation setup thru Long & McQuade with a new guitar purchase. Playing this guitar thru a good amp is also important. An amp worthy of this guitar would be the new Fender Supersonic 100 amp. I like the Supersonic amp head and a closed back speaker cabinet to get a good spanking tone from the guitar. You want to be able to play this guitar at higher than bedroom sound levels. If you are playing with a drummer you need to point one of the speaker cabinets their way so they can hear you. You might also need some EQ adjustment via an EQ pedal. If you like to play or practice for hours at a time, and why wouldn’t you with a nice guitar like this, then I suggest a stretch-able guitar strap (Comfort Strapp). This strap stretches giving much needed relief in the neck/shoulder area and after you start using one of these straps (available at Long & McQuade) then you won’t want to go back to the kind of cheap straps that come with a top of the line guitar like this. I have a cherry sunburst Strat and the finish is exquisite. The two piece body is book-matched so well you need a flashlight to spot the wood grain joining. If you wanted a one piece premium ash body I am sure Fender Custom Shop would build it for you and I am sure it would be beautiful albeit at twice the cost of the two piece. I had an off the shelf one piece ash body natural woodgrain Strat years ago with Lace Sensor pickups and I sold it. I did not know how rare a guitar like that was until I saw the new crop of guitars being made from ever diminishing natural wood forests. I believe they use something called swamp ash and those virgin untouched unpolluted places are almost extinct in this day and age. These days you have to take what you can get. I believe one guitar manufacturing company got into trouble with the government by “taking” wood from a “protected” forest. That is how desperate manufacturers are getting these days. I love the pop in tone arm, wish more guitars had one. The N3 pickups negate whatever wood the body is made out of because they are not microphonic like pickups from the 60’s where you would get squealing sounds with gain. So old pickups are a pain in a high gain environment. The ash body, however nice looking, will not affect your tone with modern pickups. The four things that make up a modern solid body electric guitar's tone are pickups, electronics, strings and the pick you use. The N3 Noiseless pickups have an improved stacked-coil design and are specially tailored for each Stratocaster pickup position. It also represents a return to the warmth and clarity of Alnico magnets. Also the type of alnico magnets used is tailored to each specific pickup position. The bridge pickup uses Alnico V for power and warmth as well as the signature snap and spank of the classic Stratocaster bridge pickup. The middle N3 pickup uses Alnico II to give the pickup it’s signature sweetness and sparkle. The neck pickup uses Alnico III to give it it’s fullness without undue magnetic string pull. The single coil Stratocaster bridge pickup has spank, it has twang and it has absolutely no dreaded 60-cycle hum. It is wired to the no-load tone control so you can cut the tone control out of the signal path and wire the bridge pickup directly to the output jack. Of all Strats this pickup is the most alive sounding pickup. It is much livelier than the Samarium Cobalt noiseless pickups and very much more responsive to picking attack. It picks up more nuances and pick sliding on the strings as well. It also has a lot more output power than the Vintage Noiseless pickups. It is also the first noiseless pickup that can pick up the 3rd fret harmonic as well. Jeff Beck may have been using this pickup for a while before they were placed in the American Deluxe line up. This is a very powerful bridge pickup and perfectly noiseless. It’s very close to an original single coil bridge pickup but it does have more of a growl to it. The middle pickup definitely has the classic Fender Stratocaster middle pickup chime. The middle pickup is balanced with the neck and bridge pickups. There isn’t a big drop-off in volume and attack when switching from the bridge pickup to the middle pickup and there isn’t a huge loss of warmth when switching from the neck pickup to the middle pickup. The middle pickup is just perfectly balanced tonally between the bridge and the neck pickups. The neck pickup is perfection. It is warm, slightly rubbery sounding with a sweet muted attack. The pickup captures that true, classic neck pickup sound of the Fender Stratocaster. There is a slight growl and more power to the sound that isn’t found on a classic single coil pickup. It’s completely hum free. Once you start playing a guitar as nicely put together as the American Deluxe line even the American Standards sound and feel cheap. This is the first single coil Strat that lets you “let ‘er rip” thru previously double coil only songs like Clapton’s “Hideaway” or Beck’s “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” convincingly. Of course, all the single coil sounds are available too for erupting like Hendrix or Malmsteen, without noise or hum.

OK, so it's not as expensive as an LP, but for a Fender it's definitely up there. But there are reasons for it; some of them are pretty subtle, but they add up. First, the necks on these are great. The compound radius fretboard means the entire neck is really playable. Even the neck heel is nice - it's rounded instead of square, so it's fits right in the palm of your hand when you get up around the 15th fret. The neck has the micro-tilt adjustment which is useful for getting the action exactly how you like it. The fretboard edges are rolled, so they're very comfortable. The locking tuners were a nice touch. They make string changes super quick. I never had any tuning issues, even with pretty heavy use of the trem. Speaking of the trem, it's the pop-in kind rather than the screw-in kind. It also has the S-1 switch with seems to give a little more punch and bite when it's on. Not massive tonal difference, but just a little edge. The finish also has nice little touches. The logo is metal, not silks-creened. And the fretmarkers in the older models were abalone. I'm probably missing a bunch of things, but those were the things that I appreciated about the Deluxe. They were mostly small touches, but they really did add up to a guitar that was really quite nice. Not substantially different from the Standards, but definitely noticable.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
