Ultra-HDDA Mic Preamps for Clear Audio Quality from All of Your Mics

TASCAM's Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamp design achieves an incredible EIN rating of -125 dBu, meaning their noise level is practically below the range of hearing. Other impressive specs include a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB, out-specing anything in its price range.

The Ultra-HDDA mic preamps and line inputs offer 20dB of headroom for distortion-free recordings of percussive, high SPL instruments like drum tracks.

16 analog inputs to record a full drumset, instruments, and vocals at the same time
Eight XLR mic inputs and eight TRS inputs can be used simultaneously for 16-track live recordings. Capture every detail of live performances or rehearsals for later mixdown.

The eight XLR mic inputs have switchable +48V phantom power to use up to 8 condenser mics at the same time. The two front panel TRS line inputs are switchable between instrument level and line level input with adjustable gain. An additional six TRS line ins on the rear of the unit are switchable between -10dB and +4dB. All of the jacks support balanced or unbalanced 1/4" signals.

It's my first audio interface so I do not have much to compare with. That said, this works perfectly for what I need. I make use the non-amplified channels (9 to 16) by plugging in my Roland TD-30 giving me near full control of each piece of my kit. I have the remaining 8 channels for other inputs. Great price for 16 channels. I've never had any problems and have been using it regularly for over a year.

I want to love this interface because it sounds great and has the exact features I value, however I've experienced intermittent stability issues. Now I've got it figured out, as some others have as well. DO NOT plug this unit into a usb 3.0 port! The manual says you can but it will operate like a 2.0 port. Not the case! Doing so has caused squealing sounds and lock ups. Fortunately, I've got it working well enough again by always using the same 2.0 port, reloading the software, and only using it with my DAW application, nothing else. I used to be able to run my Groove player through it without lock ups, but no longer. I think the next update might correct that.

Earlier I wrote a good review which only mentioned an intermettent problem regarding a high end squeal, which somehow was resolved when update 3.0 was released. 4.0 was fine too, until the last windows update a few weeks back. Now the unit squeals and locks up regularly and nothing seems to resolve the problem, so I guess I'm waiting for another Tascam update and hoping that the problem is fixed.

Low latency, quiet operation, rugged build quality, easy setup. Class compliant means it works without installing any drivers which is what I did and I had it working on my Mac in literally minutes. I didn’t install ANY of the software that came with it and I love that because I don’t have to worry about Tascam stopping making it and thus this thing becoming a doorstop. My only complaint might be that the gain knobs - they are a little tricky to make small fine adjustments, but once you get it they stay in place. Also, with a hot condenser you can sometimes still hear signal (on that channel only of course) with gain all the way down. Not a huge problem though. I’m running 3 separate stereo monitor mixes AND chaining another 8 chan. interface into the inputs on the back to get a full 16 channels which is great value for this price point! Absolutely love it.

I got this unit 2 years ago, I was working with windows and never gave me any problem. The quality is amazing, the price was right, the latency on windows 10 is super low, I'm working on Mac Right know and I do not have any problem, I'm using High Sierra and do not have any issues, I think that Tascam hit it hard on this Unit...

Do not buy if you have a Mac running Catalina, it will not work and TASCAM is not supporting drivers for it anymore so it’s basically useless if you upgrade your OS (it will detect and install fine, but you will get no sound input/output or MIDI) I had to downgrade to Mojave and it works fine but now I can no longer update my Mac and use this device. If it would work in Catalina, I would give it 5 stars otherwise

Product Experience   I've tried it

I had high hopes for this, and all started well; install, setup etc. Did some test tracking (Reaper). About 2 weeks in, all hell broke loose. A high pitched oscillating whirl started emanating from my computer (laptop, Win 10). It didn’t end up on any tracks, but I didn’t have all my drum mics in yet (on order) and was worried about condensers picking it up. That began the first trouble shoot. Then, for no apparent reason, I got signal in my system (using the mics I have) with the gain input controls on the Tascam OFF, like at ZERO. It showed up in Reaper, which I could actually record, in Skype, and other system applications. That began the second trouble shoot (the first still un-resolved). I reproduced this issue on another laptop to rule out the laptop itself. Updating firmware was a bust as it wouldn’t let me, stating that it’s already up to date. I returned it as I’m not interested in the endless trouble shooting of this nonsense, to no avail. It’s just a creative downer. I exchanged the Tascam for the Focusrite 18i20. Totally worth the extra $400. Too bad zero isn’t a rating option.

Very Good for the Money 1 of 1 customers found this review helpful

Sound quality is great. For example, clear cymbal crashes are easier to record than with my old M-Audio 10/10. The physical casing and controls are very sturdy. The EQ and track compressors come in very handy, but the digital control knobs are very unwieldy to use and aren't responsive enough. This is my main complaint. Also, I have sometimes encountered a high end squeal during play back, though it never shows up on recorded tracks. It's not due to clipping and I have pretty much eliminated the problem through trial and error adjustments, but I'm still not sure what was causing it. I like the fact that Tascam doesn't bundle this interface with a pointless entry level DAW and thereby keep the price down. I use it with both Adobe Audition 3.0 and Reaper DAWS and they are readily compatible.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.

Great Additions
