The Essence of Dominant
Dominant strings are comparable in sound to gut, without the accompanying disadvantages. These strings have a highly flexible, multi-strand nylon core and cater to artists who feel uncomfortable with steel strings. The resounding success of Dominant strings owes a lot to its similarity in tone and response to gut strings, without gut's attendant drawbacks.

New Possibilieties
The sound of the Dominant string is full and mellow, yet rich in overtones. Its radiance, the ability to project sound without being metallic, comes to the fore both in arco and pizzicato. Other advantages are Dominant's effortless response to intricate fingering and tuning stability even under extreme atmospheric conditions. But Dominant's beauty of tone is not as long lasting as that of a steel string, a price the discerning musician will be prepared to pay for this quality of sound. Dominant strings should be changed at appropriate intervals to ensure continuity of tone colour.

I have an electric Cello with a bad attitude. More specifically, buzzy, tinny strings (Yamaha SVC-50, stock strings). Threw on some Dominants and now that cello sings, I'm rather happy that I bought these things. Upsides: + Sound is fairly well balanced, they're fairly rich, complex and about half way between being mellow and lively. This played in very well to the electric Cello, taking out that buzzing, angry edge without becoming dead or uninteresting. Very appreciable characteristics for that particular instrument, but in general these are some nice strings. + Extremely easy to play on. Tension is fairly low, they're very pliable and forgiving, and would work really well for long practice sessions and particularly for playing fast passages. - Being synthetic core strings, they have a shorter usable life than steel cored ones. You may not be able to stretch their lifespan out quite as far, but that's the trade for the other great characteristics of these strings.
