Seymour Duncan Jazz Humbucker in Black - Neck
The Seymour Duncan SH-2N Jazz Model Pickup is suitable for musicians who need an accurate, clear tone for fast jazz runs. The brighter sound has slightly less output and is a good match with most pickups. A popular combination is The Jazz Model in the neck with either a JB (SH-4) or Duncan Custom (SH-5) in the bridge.

I have a Les Paul with a Duncan JB in the bridge and a Duncan 59 in the neck. I tried an Air Norton and a Slash AP2 as well in other guitars in combo with the JB and its too muddy. I have a tone in my head of what a classic neck pickup should sound like and thats the American Woman tone of BTO or Slash on some of his many soulful solos. Slash's signature pickups were disappointing. The Duncan Pearly Gates came close but with a slightly hotter midrange so I settled on a 59. Yet I had a Kramer pacer, stock JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck and quite surprised at how good the Jazz sounded, I popped the JB and Jazz into an SG. The Jazz sounds just a bit quieter than the 59, not better or worse, just slightly different. I got it just because of what it sounded like in the Kramer and could not get another 59 at the time. The Jazz is a keeper for sure as being another really good Duncan neck pickup. Not muddy at all even when you turn the tone knob down.

This is my favorite neck pickup.
In both Alder and Mahogany guitars it just works wonders. Sparkly, deep clean tones.
Works pretty good with distortion for leads as well.
Very impressed!

The name really is a misnomer for this pick up. I've never really been a fan of neck pick ups, until now. Most stock ones sound muddy and lack punch. This thing is clear and has balls for days. I just can't get over how great it is. I paired it with a JB in a G&L ASAT HB. It sounds incredible now. I would highly recommend it.

My biggest issue with most stock neck humbuckers is they tend to be muddy sounding.
I've had the Jazz installed in the neck position of 2 guitars now and they are easily my favorite neck humbucker.
They are voice with a lot of treble and very little mid and bass response. One would think they were going to be overly bright but in the neck it works great - you already have a lot of low and mid range harmonics because the strings move more in that area over the neck pickup. It balances them out and gives them clarity but they still sound full.
Doesn't matter if you are playing clean or with high gain, this pickup retains definition between notes and produces a sweet lead tone for single note lines.
In my SG Special, I can play distorted hard rock or metal rhythm parts on the neck without it turning to much or getting lost in the mix.
If you're looking for a versatile neck pickup don't let the name fool you - while it definitely could be used for jazz; it can do so much more and pairs well with almost any bridge pickup.

The only reason I did not give a 10 is because nothing is perfect... But this pickup sings!

I replaced the neck pick-up on my mahogay body guitar with this one after lots of reading about it. Probably, the appropriate word is "suave". It's tone is smooth and sweet for lead/soloing.
