Best value desk on the market for it's footprint and features. But there are some drawbacks. The bottom shelf does not mount level by design, rendering it useless. The middle bracket at the bottom is positioned an inch or so too forward or too low. My knees hit it if I tuck in too much and I don't have long legs. The desk's center of mass is a bit tippy with small 5 1/4" speaker monitors and a 27" screen on a riser on the 2nd level. Finally, and the worst part of buying this desk, was that one of the pre-drilled bolts in the side frame was over tightened and the head stripped by manufacturer assembly. They use rounded bolts and I had to tighten it down with a 2nd person and a monkey wrench.

The frames are well made. Everything fit together with minimal fuss, and you don't get the feeling that the various elements were assembled at 3pm on a Friday. You do need to be at least somewhat handy if you want it to come out OK due to the lack of pre-drilled holes. The upside to this is that you can tweak the exact position of the main desk and the upper shelf to suit you. The downside is that people who are prone to forgetting to check the direction of their drill before using it may wind up with a skewed desk. Measure 8,956 times and drill once, people. Clamps will be your friend. Also, a drill is NOT required. The core of the "wood" bits is not hard material, and I did the whole thing with a handheld screwdriver. Don't be thrown off. Overall, the thing is sturdy and level. I agree that a proper cross brace would be welcome, but the desk doesn't NEED it. I'd buy it again. Great value for a workstation. If you are also getting the monitor wings, consider installing them before you screw down your main surface, as the angles are a little fussy.

I had this desk for about 6 years and just about everything is perfect in my opinion considering the price, size, features, build quality, matching side rack options and even optional monitor attachment wings. The only thing is that the utility shelf crossbar on the bottom is welded on an angle so I couldn't assemble it as it would be on a ridiculous angle. I saw someone had the same issue in one of the other reviews. Has this happened to anyone else and most importantly has anyone found a fix for this?

I think the desk is great. I will comment on the other reviews here because nobody has corrected anyone. 1. The holes are not pre drilled on purpose so you can adjust the shelves to your liking 2. Someone mentioned the top shelf is too high and you have to tilt your head... this is incorrect. I'm 6 feet and it's fine. So you must be sitting on a lower chair. Also you can try just moving your eye balls up instead of tilting your neck. 3. It is sturdy if you build it right. I have no problems so these few people with problems must be carpentry disabled. 4. The only thing i disliked was that one of the 16 rack screws was faulty and I couldn't screw it in.

I bought this desk because it is the most compact studio desk I've seen, and is the lowest price. I really like the fact that you can have your rack and monitor stands integrated to save floor space. The quality is terrible, however. The veneer was peeling off on all of my surfaces right out of the box and all of the seams where they are glued on are visible. My cross bar is welded on at an angle, so the bottom "utility" shelf doesn't sit flat. I had to put heavy duty velcro tape on the bottom of my FX unit to keep it from sliding off. It is also really annoying that they didn't pre-drill the holes on the desk surfaces. When I am assembling something, I don't want to have to take measurements to center everything, that's what machines are for. Overall, it is a cool desk and is great for home recording artists on a budget, but I would suggest getting something else if you have extra space for a rack and monitor stands.

An update to my earlier review on the SD-02: As always, L&M was more than gracious in allowing me to return this product for a full refund. Their built-in "satisfaction insurance" is the reason I don't shop anywhere else.

Will be testing L&M's return policy on this one. Quality is fine, could live with the wood platforms screwed into place, but there is one basic design flaw that cannot be overcome: The top shelf is too high. Once the computer is up there (mine is a 27" iMac), the screen is way too high. I'm 6'4", and I still have to tilt my head up to see the screen. We've tried two different heigh-adjustable chairs, but....as they say....you can't polish a turd. You get the chair/monitor relationship right, then the keyboard is too low. Etc etc. Too bad - so much else to love about this.

Okay, so you're not going to re-create the Abbey Road console with this desk, but for home use, it's fantastic!! Easy to assemble...yes the holes are not pre-drilled for the table top or shelves, but a firm tap with the screw driver and you're all set. It's really well designed and laid out, and if you build it right, it's incredibly sturdy. Let it settle for a few weeks with gear on it, and then go back and re-tighten all of the screws.

I bought this mainly for it's clean lines and it's rack space. I actually have the SD-01 which is the larger desk. There are some oddities though. The keyboard tray is not centred in the desk frame. I thought this might have been just mine, but I read another reviewer mention the same thing. This makes no sense. One can get used to it, but I just re-welded the parts to center the tray. Also, the top rack space isn't usable as the bracket from the top shelf encroaches into the space for the component. I took a hacksaw and just whacked off that piece. This desk is usable in it's delivered form, but you have to overlook some things. As mentioned earlier, the keyboard tray just doesn't come out enough, but you can remove the locking screws and solve that. Honestly, the best selling feature of this desk is the frame. If the desktop/shelf doesn't work for you, make one of your own I guess.

I really can't see how you can do any better than this desk at this price point. To be fair, it does take a little more time and thought to put together than your average IKEA furniture - but with a pencil, tape measure and drill it really wasn't too hard. Like some others I preferred drilling my own holes anyway. I set the bottom shelf towards the back, so my legs have more room in the front without hitting it. I also set the top shelf forward, because my eyes aren't that great and don't want the monitor too far away. The result is a very sturdy and strong desk. I have had no issues with it. I would have liked it to come in a variety of colors - I probably would have preferred a plain black finish - but with more options comes more price, so I can live with it. It also came with a complete second set of all screws, rack screws and was packed very well. I can't really fault it.

As far as quality, it is pretty decent for its price. It is not the sturdiest piece of furniture ,but, it is also not meant for heavy storage just monitors, your computer and the rest of your home D.A.W equipment. Putting it together is very easy!, just a little bit of time and patience and it goes up easy, but if you are not a do-it-yourselfer, get someone to help you. It has plenty of space but I would recommend you buy the right and left wing support monitor extension arms.

Just recieved the SD02 small studio desk and it's great! Very sturdy, not the easiest to build as the instructions are very poor but if you take your time and you're somewhat handy with tools you'll be fine. Use a measuring tape to ensure everything is balanced and well placed. The side wing speaker shelves I purchased are great as well. This desk is quite big, happy I didn't buy the larger SD01 desk. I would recommend this desk for any home studio!

I bought the SD-01 but could not find it on the L&M site. Over all desk went together well, except as others have found the keyboard tray should pull out further (I'll try the mod), but I on the SD-01 I have the keyboard tray is off center by 4 inches? Don't know why? Also the Rack space is great expect, again on the SD-01 I have, you can't use the top space as part of the upper shelf support structure intrudes on the space. Perhaps I'll try a hammer! Over all, very happy with the SD-01.

I bought this desk a while back and I'm very happy with it. The only mistake I made was not getting the branch stands for monitors....it's a big desk for what I needed at the time, but I realize now that I could always use more room (especially if you have G.A.S.) I would buy another one if this one was damaged beyond repair. I like that fact that I can rack mount equipment in it as well, even though I don't have any rack stuff.....yet. Good desk for a smaller type home studio. Sturdy as well.

Honestly, at $240 you couldn't buy half a studio desk anywhere else. Its actually quite simple to set up....yes, there aren't pre drilled holes but I did find it very handy as I wanted to sit the top piece further back for my monitors and speakers. And really, all you need is a measuring tape, a screwdriver and a hammer. Just hammer in the tip of the screw and you're good to go. Also, keyboard shelf is plenty big enough for my keyboard and mouse. Finally, my desk doesn't wobble at all. Perhaps these reviewers need to take a little more time when putting it together. Awesome desk at this price point! My board fits perfectly on the main level with Both monitors on the upper, nice cubby for my reference material, great rack (with mounting screws) for my outboard gear and if I ever need more I'll buy the side car. Not too mention, L&M ordered this for me and I received it only two days later! Honestly, I did my homework before buying and this desk is a steal at this price!!! Buy it, take your time setting it up and you won't regret this purchase.

I bought this after a good friend who also owns one recommended it to me. My brother came over with his electric drill and we had this thing assembled in about an hour and a half, taking our time to make sure we were doing it properly. Other reviewers have indicated that it isn't sturdy, but I suspect that they may not have assembled it completely correctly. The upper shelf is the perfect height and size for both monitor speakers and a 24" computer monitor, so there is really no need for additional monitor stands. It's got a few 14" rack spaces where my 8 x 8 interface and an external processor go, and there is a small shelf under the desk were I put a couple of external storage drives. The main surface has plenty of room, I currently only use it for my laptop, but there is more than enough space to add a control surface when I get around to it. I love this desk and would recommend it for anyone putting together their first home studio.

Now that I've been using this desk for a few months and have also tried out the monitor wings that you can attach to the desk for your speakers, I thought I'd update my original review. First, the desk. The CD tray, small lower shelf and effects rack are nice features, and it's great Yorkville includes the hardware for installing your effects. And the previous reviewer is right - by removing the locking screws the keyboard tray it does extend out making most of the surface usable. It would be nice if this had been mentioned in the assembly instructions. As to the lack of pre-drilled holes, Yorkville can claim this is a "feature", but as there are no pre-drilled holes on their monitor wings or the Studio Side desk either, and there being no benefit to this, I cannot see how this is anything but cheap manufacturing. The amount you can adjust the main desk of this unit is at most 2- 3 ", and what is the point at all in not having the monitor bridge centred properly? Or the monitor wings or studio side desk top? My desktop remains unattached to the frame, which thankfully is sturdy enough for its inteneded purpose. The main flaw with this unit is the height of the main desk surface, which is 29" from the floor. This means the surface of the white keys of any keyboard is going to be 31.5 to 32 inches from the floor, where the ideal height is 29.5". Unless you invest in an adjustable drum or piano stool, the blood will be draining from your increasingly tired arms as you try to play. I found the desk useless as a keyboard stand, and have to keep my controller on a side stand and turn around to see the video screen. Did anyone actually try to use this thing before they shipped it? As to the monitor wings. I found one review online warning they would not be level. Sure enough, when I attached them to the main frame they were crooked, and when I put my monitors on them they leaned like the Tower of Pisa, or listed like the Titantic 20 minutes after the iceberg hit. No way would I leave my BM5As on them. And they looked awful. Useless. And as both I and the other online reviewer found the same flaw, I think it's safe to assume it is in the design itself and not the particular wings we each had. I returned them and got stands.

After reading the 2 previous pretty questionable reviews I still went ahead and ordered the workstation with some trepidation as there were very limited other options - it was the right size and it had good features. Now that it's up I'm pleasantly surprised overall and certainly with the quality. I agree it's not perfectly stable but it's pretty good and probably pretty much as good as you'll find with this kind of design. But I'll still probably add a brace just to improve things a bit. As for the surfaces not being predrilled, this is a feature in my eyes because you can try a few options and choose just where to lock things to best suit your equipment - there's quite a bit of movement possible. As for the keyboard shelf - yes it barely came out as delivered, maybe just far enough for a little iMac keyboard. But if you look there are 2 black philips locking screws that can be removed and then it comes out amazingly far - perhaps 13-14". Anyway good price and good stuff in my estimation.

I got this table for my studio because it was the right size and looked good. But after assembling it, and triple checking along the way to make sure it was put together correctly, the table is a bit wobbly. I contacted the store to ask if it was possible some directions or extra parts were missing and they assured me it was correct. So now I have a $235.00 studio table that wobbles. I'm not a carpenter or anything so I can't even begin to comprehend how to sure it up and make it more stable.

Where I live, there aren't a lot of options for buying a purpose-built studio desk, so this is what I got. The metal frame is strong and well-built. However, none of the wooden panels have pre-drilled holes, nor any marker telling you where to drill them, so you have to measure and centre them yourself. Have a tape measure and power drill handy. I don't have a drill, so I had to just lay the panels over the frame and let gravity do the rest. Also bad if you have to move, as the MDF board will strip easily, and you'll have to drill new holes. Not well planned, and pretty cheap. Aside from that, it is sturdy and fairly attractive. The front of the main desk is only 43", not 46". And only about half the surface of the keyboard tray is accessible. The lower utility shelf is so close to the main desk it isn't good for much except maybe your power bar, manuals, or odds and ends. If you have other options, consider them. Otherwise, it does what it is supposed to do, and is of sufficient quality for the money paid. I'm not unhappy with it, just have to wonder what they were thinking sometimes.
