A new kind of electric violin taking its design inspiration from the organic beauty of wood, the simplicity of clean lines, and the comfort of light weight, combined with innovative Yamaha sound to create this gorgeous live-performance instrument. (5-string model)

Inspired by craft and design elements of Yamaha acoustic guitars, Yamaha set out to design a new kind of electric violin made primarily from wooden materials. This instrument takes a design cue from both violin and acoustic guitar shapes, creating a beautiful yet amazingly lightweight instrument made with six different woods. These wood materials are carefully crafted with an airy infinity loop-like design, representing the dimensions of acoustic space, and is as stunning visually as it is fun to play. Using a unique Yamaha bridge pickup that carries over from professional Yamaha Silent Violins, this instrument delivers a smooth, organic and warm tone. The design incorporates a simple 1/4" input to match the clean and natural aesthetic of this innovative electric violin.

Features:

• Mobius strip-like shape provides continuity between front and back. Three-dimensional form is designed to appeal to the audience when performing live.
• Lightweight design
• Allows for most standard shoulder, chin rests and tailpieces
• Maple, mahogany and spruce body produces a rich, strong tone as the bow grips the string
• Walnut frame brings an ideal blend of flexibility and strength in a 5-layer wood design that is not only striking, but also contributes to natural resonance vibration when played with a bow.
• Professional-grade bridge pickup. While effectively picking up the sound of the entire instrument, it also captures the instrument's attack and the player's expressive bowing nuances.
• On-board volume control bypass selects direct output of the pickup signal, or output via the instrument's volume control. Direct output delivers the instrument's full sonic potential, with rich lows and punchy impact.

I have used an acoustic violin for many years, this is a treat for what I like to do. Purists will say that a 5-string violin is neither a viola nor a violin, but I will say this one is both! The extended low range is fun to add parts to your playing that are not possible with a violin. The only thing is that the strings are a bit close to each other and you need to adjust your technique. The look is stunning, construction is flawless, the tuning pegs and fine-tuners keep the instrument in tune, the passive pickup system is the same as the one we find on the more expensive "silent violin" and does not use a battery. It produces plenty of output signal but for additional control I plug it to an acoustic pre-amp and equalizer pedals. Of course one nice feature of an electric violin is that you can practice almost silently, and you can get all the volume you need when performing. But because this one has no onboard pre-amp you need an amp if you want to use headphones. I use a Yamaha THR5A amplifier at home and in small sessions. Because it has no body there is no feedback issue when plugged into a PA. Great instrument. Thanks Yamaha.

I purchased this 5 string for two main reasons... Firstly, my practice sessions were limited by the acoustic fiddle that I use, because of how loud it is. I needed to keep the volume down because of the hours I keep. I could have used a mute, but that takes the soul out of my accoustic instrument. With the YEV-105, I plug into garage band for simplicity and portability, put on some phones and I get lost for a couple of hours. Secondly, plugging my acoustic in, causes no end to the feedback grief. Micing it, same... Plugging the YEV-105 in, is a joy! All of my guitar pedals and amps are totally and fully compatible. It's a whole new world... The setup is something I have tweaked, I think most musicians make adjustments to their instruments. Basically I did a little bridge work to bring the action down a bit, for my liking. That being said, It was playable right out of the box. Surprised that it came with D'addario Zyex GDAE strings and a Helicore C string. These are responsive, expensive synthetic core strings. Yamaha has knocked it out of the park, as far as I'm concerned.

I just bought a YEV 105 in natural finish, from the Peterborough store. Have barely stopped playing it for 3 days! I love that it is bare-bones. No need for internal amps and effects, or a battery. Sounds great through both my Traynor and Roland acoustic amps. I've tried Bridge (borrowed it for a week) and NS 5 strings at L&M. For me, strings were too close together and very difficult to manage. YEV 105 has quite a wide (and thick) neck which suits me.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
