Style: Swing
Level: Medium Easy
Well, here is another classic, instantly recognizable Frank Sinatra arrangement. This chart comes from the 1996 'Strangers in the Night' record, which, despite the success of the record, proved to be last collaboration between Sinatra and Riddle. An organ is featured on the recording (along with piano). In addition, the ending is scored for alto 1 and tenor 1 to double on flutes. In April 2012 Jazz Lines updated the publication of this arrangement to include the string parts along with parts written for harp and vibraphone. The vibe part was not played on the original recording, but has been included here for historic value. They have included an optional synthesizer part to be used in the event that you do not have access to string players.
This is a very straight-forward chart with no big surprises. The trick is to get that laid-back, Basie-style, swing feel. The tempo is approximately 92 bpm. The ranges are very comfortable, but the vocals go through several modulations: D flat to E flat to F. This is just another great, must-have Sinatra chart that your audience will love!
