I tried various pickups over the years from Dimarzio, Seymour Duncan, Gibson and Fender. Some were stock in a guitar then some were not. As far as single coils, the Texas Special stuck out, not because of SRV so much but because they had more gain. I originally had an SRV Signature Strat but could not get used to the left handed tremolo bar so I sold the guitar. I kept the sound of the stock Texas Specials in my head ever since. I had other Strats, an AVRI 50s and 70s, and an actual 1974 all with stock pickups but in slimming the herd to just one Strat, I kept the 1974. The stock pickups were good but what if I SRVd it up and put Texas Specials in there? I'd keep the stock pickups just in case the Texas Specials were no good. I was very surprised at how good they sound as there is a better transparency in the positions 2 and 4 than there ever was. Not a huge difference over the stock pickups but there is a hair more gain, more treble and bass and slightly less midrange. You can't help but play like SRV so get away from that and I think the Texas Specials are easily Fender's best Custom pickup along side the Fat 50s and Custom 69s. Very useable and recommended.

After a recent gig with these pickups in my strat another guitar player mentioned off hand that my tone sounded exactly like SRV. Imagine the shade of pink I turned upon hearing that!!
We weren't doing Double Trouble covers, and my playing is nowhere close to professional, but others noticed even through a live mix.
If you're after Stevie's tone these got me as close as my fingers will let me get.
