A Companion to Evoking Sound: Fundamentals of Choral Conducting

Authors: James Jordan with Giselle Wyers
Exercises: by Roger Ames and Gerald Custer
Format: Book
Version: Choral Conducting Text Suppliment

One of the fundamental approaches of the critically acclaimed Evoking Sound conducting text is that conducting technique must be developed in tandem with one's ear. This indispensable collection of music and materials for individual or class study is organized beginning with unison pieces and canons through four-part polyphonic literature. Performance editions of the pieces for study are included as well as other valuable components:
  • All music presented in complete performance editions
  • An extensive section devoted to the application of Laban to conducting. This section contains specific exercises to help conductors understand how to apply Laban's theories to their conducting. Extensive materials and exercises compiled and written by Giselle Wyers
  • Music covers a wide range of musical styles and textures
  • A section of exercises devoted to the development of conducting technique with exercises in unusual meter that also emphasize changes in dynamics and fermatas. Exercises composed by Roger Ames and Gerald Custer
  • Contains study assignments for other supporting materials in the Evoking Sound conducting series
  • Contains forms for duplication for use in classroom or self-evaluation
  • Contains musical materials for an entire course of study in conducting from beginning levels through graduate study

James Jordan is senior conductor at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey, the foremost centre for the study and performance of choral music in the world.

Giselle Wyers is Assistant Professor of Choral Studies and Voice at the University of Washington, where she conducts the University Chorale and teaches courses in voice, undergraduate choral conducting, graduate choral repertoire, and music methods.
