Having used digital mixing gear in the studio for close to 40 years (Synclavier, PostPro, WaveFrame, Pro Tools) I've been looking for something similar for live mixing. This fits the bill for my use perfectly. Although you can't use 3rd party plugins with the Ui16, it comes with a solid complement of DSP tools on EVERY input and output channel. The only feature I miss is side-chain ducking; for example, occasionally I'd like to attenuate backing rhythm instruments a couple of dB automatically when the lead vocalist is singing. Other than that, I have had zero issues with connectivity using a spare switch and wireless access point that I had lying around in lieu of an all-in-one external router. If you do your networking homework, you shouldn't encounter any problems with connectivity. The ability to save snapshots and shows allows you to pre-program most parameters during rehearsal, and then step through the snapshots one at a time as you work through a set of songs on stage. Useful extras include the ability to record the master 2-mix (at much higher than CD-quality) and play music between sets directly off USB sticks. Performers who use stereo or mono backing tracks in their shows will also find the USB playback useful. For the ridiculously low price of the Ui16, I have given the product 5 stars in every category. If it were priced three times higher, I'd expect a slightly more robust power connection (like an IEC connector), cooling fans (considering that the rack ears invite rack-mounting the unit in an enclosed portable rack case), and better on-board Wi-Fi performance. But these are really very minor issues in view of the Ui16's incredible price-performance ratio.

This is a great little mixer for the price point with a surprising amount of features and power under the hood. With that being said It does have one large flaw...the reliability of the wireless hot spot is "shotty" at best. And its kind of the key feature of the unit. I have had it drop out on me numerous times during a live event. And the only way to reconnect to the mixer is to disconnect the device and power cycle the mixer. Not the best scenario for live situations. You do have the option to of connecting a mouse, keyboard and monitor to the mixer directly, but again, I have had it loose its handshake and get stuck waiting for the mixer to reconnect. The only reliable way to avoid the dropout is to hardwire a PC directly to the mixer and configure the mixer's network settings to allow multiple devices to connect to it. If you're like me and mobile, smaller venues and smaller gigs don't always provide you with the best area to set up for Front of House. Although the redundancy is an effective failsafe, you may find yourself having to run across your venue space to get your control back. Again, not the best solution. I've checked with Soundcraft's recommended settings and supported devices (newer gen hardware won't interface with this device), and still have the issue. I have access to two of them at both venues I work for, and run into the issue on both consoles. In conclusion, the preamps are a little "cold" and its packed with features for little mixer. But if you're going to spend the money, plan for fails and have redundancy in line to save you. Or consider getting the big brother, the Ui24, I've worked on that unit with no fails to date. Happy mixing!

I have been mixing FOH professionally for forty years. Pretty stuck on analog gear. It was time to break into digital for a small P.A. I was building for a jazz band. A bit of research lead me to this, and I bought one sight unseen. Out of the box, to mixing in about 20 minutes! If you have even rudimentary skills with an analog board, you will figure this out without reading the manual. Watch a few videos, and you uncover enough features to make analog look positively last century. Let's see 18 parametric EQ's, 18 DBX compressors, 18 Lexicon reverbs, 6 31 band EQ's in analog terms that's $20K! Add in snapshot automation, and you're in a whole different world. One fail- The built in Wifi is only OK. It will work if you are only mixing from stage, but it farts out walking around in the audience. Simple fix, a $70 router, and the WiFi works flawlessly everywhere. In a home studio you would connect with ethernet anyway. The only reason this doesn't get a perfect review is the WiFi. Otherwise, it will rock your world.

I've been using analogue mixers for 20-years and so I know my way around a board. The Soundcraft UI16 is my first digital mixer and I can tell you right up front that the UI16 is a winner. You?d need racks and racks of outboard processors to get what is available on every channel here. It's fabulous to set everything up - once - then save it and bingo you're good to go. The stereo record function is also great for a virtual sound check or taking your work to garage band. Just get your levels right before you record because you can't change them later. The internal WiFi is ok for rehersal's, but not gigs. Get an external router and you'll be golden on stage. Mixing from any html5 browser (iPad or iPhone) works great and is super intuitive. Having full led metering on every channel and input is super useful. No more ?clipping indicators!? Be aware that your level presets are stored with one function but the other 'local mixer settings? are stored with another function. You'll need to save/load both when you finish/start to get back what you had last time. I just can't say enough great things about this rig. I will never go back to analogue mixers.

Used it in our band. Great piece of gear. Love the HTML-based mixer app to control my monitor mix. The only thing I found odd was the aux sends not being 1/4" instead of XLR. Otherwise, I love working with this unit.

the overall sound is very clean, nice expanding bass with tight articulation of the low notes, this all in one rig is great for working musicians who wanna set up and break down fast. I'd recommend it to anyone, can't wait to get the new Ui24R

I've been an analogue guy for years and making the transition to digital with this mixer was super simple. The interface, although digital, is very familiar when you first see it. The features and the menus for reaching them is very well thought out and intuitive. I would have gone live with this, comfortably, after using it for about 1/2 hour. For more advanced features, there's also excellent tutorials on Youtube I highly recommend.

I recently purchased this for use at a school, hoping it would help make live event setup and production faster and easier. It's a really great concept that turned out to lack reliability and created significant frustration due to w/l signal loss. It's reliable using network cable to connect to a laptop or other controller but that totally defeats the purpose of a wireless mixer. Use of a browser to control your mixing features is genius however and the feedback filter setting process is excellent - especially since it's available on every input and monitor channel. I question the marketing of this product. It's advertised as having 16 input channels but functionally, you can access only 12 for live production. Wireless reliability is this product's downfall. If you buy it, be prepared to do a lot of research and scan w/l channels at your venue to minimize risk of signal loss. You could also purchase a separate wireless router but why should you? For me, the risk of using this is too great to justify keeping it. Maybe the next generation of this product will be an improvement.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
