Whether it's broadcast, podcast or recording, the SM7B captures smooth, warm vocals that connect the speaker to the listener.

The SM7B dynamic microphone has a smooth, flat, wide-range frequency response that preserves the natural beauty of the sound it captures. The SM7B is an outstanding choice for the following applications:
• Recording StudioInstrumental and Vocal
• Location Recording

Look, Michael Jackson didn't record his Thriller vocals on this mic. I know there's an unwritten rule that every review of this mic cites this "fact," but the SM7b didn't exist back then. Maybe that missing "b" doesn't sound that significant, but in the words of the man who recorded MJ's vocals, "the SM7b is not like the SM7." That said, the SM7b is an annoying good mic. It's bulky, expensive, way too quiet, and looks dumb (imo, I know some people love its looks for reasons that escape me). It also fails to pick up anything I find grating or ugly about my voice. What's left is just this smooth and somehow-still accurate version of my singing. The first time I listened back to playback of my voice, I was shocked. This big, heavy, stupid-looking mic made me like my singing, instead of cringing inside when I listened back to an isolated recording. Something similar happened when I was helping my dad pick out a mic to use to record audio versions of his books. We did a shootout with some of the mics I had and rented a bunch more from L&Q, and while a lot subtleties were lost on him, he gravitated right away to the SM7b. I was trying to argue there was some good, cheaper alternatives – all we’d have to do is apply some EQ, be careful about good mic technique, get a pop and foam filter, probably a better stand to reject desk vibrations, jury-rig some sound treatment to reduce the room reverb... But he wasn’t buying it. I had to concede the SM7b is easy and basically idiot-proof. Put it up on anything that will support its weight, plug it into something with good preamps, and get it near your mouth-hole and it will produce great-sounding audio. A producer friend called it “a vocal booth in a mic” when I told her this story, and she’s right. I still think it's a bit overpriced – you're paying in part for its fetishization by the "creator community." But if you can get it on sale or pick one up used – which seems pretty do-able, given how popular they are and how much L&Q rents it out – it's a great mic for a good price. Don't buy it from a stranger on the internet or Amazon/Alibaba/etc, though – apparently there's loads of fakes out there, we almost fell for that! The mic's built like a tank too – the one we ended up with had apparentlybeen rented out for 1000+ days, but it's still in good shape cosmetically and works and sounds great. If you buy it, it will probably outlive you – how much electronic gear can make that claim these days.

Shure is the biggest mic company out there! If many people are using the Shure SM7B there's a good reason for that. I traded my Blue Baby Bottle SL for the Shure SM7B. It catches less room noise and vocals are so smooth. This mic is super popular but i'll recommend it to others even if it's selling very well. It needs a lot of clean gain, so I recommend an in-line mic booster SE Dynamite or a Clark Teknik if you want a cheaper choice. Only if you have a cheap mixer or interface that needs a booster. All in all great mic don't take word go try it for yourself folks!

If you're thinking of buying another mic, leave the store, save your pennies THEN come back to buy this mic. As other have noted, it is improved by the use of a mic booster (cloud lifter, McBoost, etc...) What a CRISP mic. SUPER clean audio, low noise, looks pretty and has a solid build. The bass cut, mid boost settings inherent in the microphone really do wonders to make your voice stand out through other music, or other voices in a conference call. 100% recommended!

We all want the fancy high priced mics. I have some like vintage U87's. But the truth is that sometime condenser are to much sensitive to transient on some instruments or voices. Some high-mid loud voice benefit a lot from a SM7b because the dynamic design soften those agressive elements. In fact this mic was the top producer secret who won't tell a 400$ mic was all they needed. For exemple the Michael Jackson Triller album voices was all recorded using it! The only draw back: It need a hefty preamplifier to drive it. So, If you have a relatively cheap interface it may be that the preamp will need to be cranked up and become noisy. With a good preamp you wont have this problem.

This is a solid dynamic microphone, and finally getting a hold of it now, I can see why people refer to this as the "gold standard" when it comes to dynamic broadcasting mic. But I need to praise that fact that they ship this product to me in one day right after the transaction. While in Amazon.ca when I ordered this, this mic got stuck to "Not yet Shipped" for 4 DAYS! I cancelled the order and got the mic in 3 days. I love you guys, keep up the good work.

Industry standard mic at an amazing price! This mic made its start as a broadcast mic but has made a name as a studio mic amongst many great engineers and artists!! Not saying this is the holy grail because mics are very subjective to source, style or music, type of voice etc, but this mic does do many things well! I can name a few things I know that it is proven well on. Vocals, bass and guitar cab, Snare , floor tom, outside kick! Personally Ive only used it on male vox and bass cab! it excels on male rap vox and is a go to standard for rock and metal vox because its a dynamic and can handle very high spl's! all i can say is if your serious about recording or looking for a great mic give this serious consideration, its a beast! Its also got the awsome rolloff and mid boost switch! but ya if your a rapper, rock or metal singer this should be in your arsenal! Im aiming to own 2 minimum!

Paired up with a cloudlifter, you've got a mic built like a tank, that will never quit on you. I've got two in my studio, and as the executive owner of Ward 3 Records, I do not record vocals without using one of these. Take your expensive vocal mic, take a 7B, turn on phantom power and you'll get the best vocals. The bass roll off in the back is a great tool for tracking acoustic guitar as well. I could happily use just the 7B on professional recordings with a little EQ and some nice reverb. I recommend this for LOUD vocals. If you've got a very powerful singer in your studio, or if you yourself are a loud and powerful vocalist, this mic will never distort. As long as your levels aren't too high on your pre amp. I use an AT 40/50 and two of these on either side of my vocalist, with the cloudlifter and an apogee quartet. With the cloud I find, keeping my levels around 1 quarter is more than enough volume. Running into Logic Pro x, and a compressor, you will never hear a complaint about clarity, and functionality. If I could, I would have 100 of these things. Like I said before, they are built like a tank. Very intelligently designed with heavy casing, just pop it on your stand, no shock mount required, and you are all set! A lot of the time a pop filter is not necessary. I hear people saying to get this as a "starter mic". If you've got the right pre amps, and you know how to use your DAW, you can track incredible vocals with this mic alone. I would recommend it to anyone who cares about longevity and tone. It's just a great mic.

What can I say....after years of meticulously searching for the perfect male vocal microphone, I finally found it in the Shure SM7 . I works fabulously on acoustic guitar also, as a bonus! I can now see why Michael Jackson used it on his THRILLER album. Buy one! You will be amazed!!

7B Is no matter what always one of the first mics I reach for. I tend to do a lot of multiple mic patterns recording simultaneously to get a nice balance and character from each mic. The SM7B is the most reliable, forgiving and overall fun mic to use in the studio for Vocals, Guitars, etc. if you own a studio get one of these as a starting point microphone.

Having this mic in your collection is more or less the equivalent of picking up milk/eggs/bread when grocery shopping. It's simply a must-own essential. All of MJ's thriller was done with this mic. If you have never purchased a mic this should really be the first one you buy, after owning this one and getting to know it better... then you can branch out and get a more characterized mic, this one is just perfectly flat and will record anyone's voice without cheaping out on the highs/mids/lows.

Great Mic right here. I work in radio and have used this mic many times. It is an essential in countless studios. Fun fact: Michael Jackson recorded the album "Thriller" with this mic. As soon as I got a few bucks extra this is the next thing I add to my studio.

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
