Ok. You can make patterns in no time at all & tweak EVERY sound (even every individual drum sound), but I've taken this little gem a little further. First, it needed a couple of physical upgrades. I applied the matte/white lettering overlay & replaced the unsightly red inlays on the sides with classy homemade wooden ones - there, that's better.
So the MIDI channels are, by default:
Track 1 - Digital Synth - Channel 1
Track 2 - Digital Synth - Channel 2
Track 3 - Drums - Channel 10
Track 4 - Analog Synth - Channel 3
Now I have unashamedly jumped on the Behringer clone bandwagon, but whatever, they're fun & I have 6 of them & intended to get a couple more. Anyway, I chain up 3 of them to my JD, set their MIDI channels to 1, 2 & 3. Now turn the volume down on each track of the JD, using the AMP/ENV knob. Now I can play/sequence my Behringers through the JD & switch between them by selecting whatever track - simple. Pretty much like having an Arturia Keystep (I think - I've never tried one.) I keep the drum channel for the JD's drums - but - I have an old Roland SP-808 (I know right?) & here's where I've maxed the JD out. On Track 3 (drums), the sounds physically only go up so far on the keyboard, leaving the last 11 keys in the high octave with no sounds on them. I chain in my SP-808, set it to channel 10 & configure the 808's pads to trigger sequentially on the first key that has no drum sounds on it & now I can add samples in the mix. Unfortunately the SP-808 only has 4 note polyphony, but whatever, what more do I need? Well, I can always layer in the internal sounds on the JD, by just turning up the AMP/ENV knob for each track. Technically, using the 3 synth tracks for external MIDI & layering the internal sounds on top of those + the 4 note polyphony of the 808 + the drum track on the JD, that gives me 11 tracks to play with (imagine hooking up an SP-404!) I am ultimately very happy with the JD-XI & am actively seeking out another used one.

I bought the JD-Xi back in 2016 and always find new hidden features. The best aspect of all is as a composition tool. If you are looking for a synth to get you writing song ideas, this synth is it. I also love the ability to fine tune your sounds and save them with customized titles. Very important for live shows when you need to get your sounds ready quickly! The sounds are great, and I think it will remain a keeper for any synth collector. I have not broken any keys playing gigs in Winnipeg, but I also know to adjust my playing when not in a weighted key keyboard. If you are recording, it is a good idea to plug into a larger keyboard with midi cables to give you the bigger range. I would recommend getting the overlay after you purchase this synth, and to experiment with using an SM58 into the mic input for better sound. That is what Zedd did with his JD-Xi on "In the Middle".

Ok. First things first. I love this synth, a lot. I've had it over a year now and filled up half of the 256 user song banks with full songs and sketches for multiple albums.
If you can tolerate menu diving, it has some solid synthesis options. The filter is pretty steppy, and makes it hard to get your parameters just right when you find a perfect sound, but you can usually work around it. Getting this synth saved me from having to buy a separate drum machine and other synths just to be able to build songs. Between this and my 404sx sampler, I have an entire band going. The sequencer is really solid, and ideas just flow into it. The reverb and delay are solid, and you can use the flange as a chorus if you set the feedback to 0, but most of the other effects sound a bit cheap. I mean, they're all built in anyway. You're still saving tons of money on this thing.
But. About 8 months into owning it a key broke. A month later another one broke, and I am getting a weird glitch where the synths get super super quiet, and I'm going to have to take it in for repairs. Some of the other keys feel loose, and I bet they're going to break too. Folks on a synth forum posted pictures of one of these taken apart, and it's held together with the cheapest plastic possible. Many others had broken keys within a year of purchase. I played mine almost every day until it got to the point of being too broken to be fun without repairs.
I'd say get it, but make sure you keep your receipt so you can get it fixed under warranty. Because you may well have to if you use it a lot. I don't have my original receipt and I'm pretty upset with Roland Support. They don't answer your questions directly and it's hard to get help when something goes wrong. That said, I'm willing to spend the couple hundred dollars on repairs because I love it that much.
This was my introduction to getting synths and now I spend all my freakin time going to Long and McQuade playing things I can't afford, watching gear reviews online, and I am totally hooked. Thanks to this little thing. It has... complicated my life. Really good for a beginner. I've tried going back to using VSTs in Ableton and they all sound like GARBAGE now that I have a real synth. But also... there are a lot of fancier synths out there too. Still, most of them don't have the sequencer and pattern capabilities that this thing has, except for workstations, which almost always sound like the synths used on 90's TV shows. Did I mention that the final bass patch in the JD-Xi is the same Roland Slap bass used on the Seinfeld theme?
K. Whatever. Have fun. Try it out before you get it.

What a whopping package deal - super tweakable fat drum machine, 2 64 voice polysynths based on the Jupiter 80 engine, and an analog monosynth. And vocoder. And arpeggiator. And sequencer. etc. Wipes out all other similar sized competitors. This is Roland deciding to take the market by storm after 29 years of being out of the analog synth game.

Blows away MiniNova, MicroKorg, Gaia in sounds quality. This synth is often totally indistinguishable from vintage analogs. Roland has really raised the bar. Plus the sweet analog monosynth included, and the fat vintage vocoder etc etc etc. Best Roland synth EVER for quality sound, features and price.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.
How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
- Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
- Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
- No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.

Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.
Purchasing additional years of coverage
Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.
If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:
- NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
- USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
- GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
- BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
