This unit works very well, it's easy to use and the results are quite satisfying. It's good value because it does about 400 different things, most of them quite well. The manual is large and the capabilities seem endless.
If you don't like always being attached to a computer and mouse, here's a fine way to play, record, mix and master up to sixteen channels, with professional results. It's light, compact, and can run on batteries, so you can take it to a picnic.

My drummer and I were in L&M when a Zoom rep was doing a seminar on the R series recorders. The rep showed how easy it was to make a quality, home recording with this one devise and the Cubase drag and drop feature so we bought one. My drummer and I have had nothing but issues with the Cubase system included. Issues include having to restart the program multiple times and restarting my PC to make Cubase recognize the board. After reading other reviews online and seeing familiar reviews, my opinion is that Zoom should bring cost down by simply selling the board and letting the consumer pick out what DAW software they wish work with. R16 itself works awesome; lots of handy features like phantom power, on-board mics and effects. Board would get a 4 rating if they got rid of the software. I'm tired of hearing PC is my problem. If the programs designed for PC it should work on PC not be an excuse.

Ive had mine for 2-3 years now and its an amazing piece of tech. I do a solo one man band act and I use this as my mixer/live recorder. Later I pull the SD card out and dump the tracks into Cubase for critiquing. Its helped me hone my stage show. Yes its made of plastic and you have to baby it, come on you cant be a kid all your life. Mine has an issue with some corrosion on the adaptor input that a product called Deoxit has fixed so yes some maintenance is needed to keep it running well, and that means cleaning the inputs as well. One of the previous reviewers said one of his guitar jacks broke inside and now he cant use one of the inputs...hey...use good cables and be carefull....ITS MADE OF PLASTIC!!!!! If you want a great unit that you can record 8 inputs live off the floor get one of these. I record 5 tracks live every night on to a 16 gig card and have power to spare. I can record over 7 hrs on to a 16 gig card using 5 tracks. What more do I need. I recently started using the built in mics to record the ambience while Im playing and when mixed in with the rest of the tracks adds that live width and room verb that really make the recordings sound pro. Im gonna buy a second one so I can mic up and record my rockabilly band project. These things are amazing for the price. Get one.

When I first bought this I was very excited, it has many features include amp simulations, eq, a nice board for mixing on and very easy controls (once you get used to them.)
However as I continued to use it the product started giving me headaches, first off I have noticed the first input's response to high frequencies has diminished over time. Also when taking out a patch chord on input 2 something inside broke which means I can only use xlr cables with the second input. I am very nervous about packing up the zoom to move between locations since it is almost completely made of plastic and feels very flimsy.
As for using it with daws you may just want to forget about it, the zoom's drivers are so inconsistent and frustrating it's better just to mix it on the board. After about a month of on and off tinkering with the zoom and my mac I managed to get the control surfaces and the audio inputs to work, however I had to replace the hardrive on my computer recently. This resulted in me having to reinstall the drivers and I can't get any signal from my zoom. I did try to email zoom for help, they managed to reply about three weeks later with a completely useless email simply redirecting me to the drivers.
Overall if the build quality and daw support was better for the zoom I would recommend it however I have had too many issues with it to feel it is really worth the money.

i've owned this unit for over 2 years now. my friends cant believe that i do all my recordings at home. easy to use. great amp sounds. bass and acoustic sims are a bit weak in my opinion. but overall? i'd by one again in a minute. be gentle with it though cuz it is made of plastic.

Have been using for tracking, still mixing on a PC, but i may try it as an interface when i have a dedicated music workstation again, very soon. i haven't tapped into the full feature set yet so i can't say how good this is at doing everything else. i like the silent SD card recording, tuner is very handy, amp models are good, auto punch and markers are invaluable and the machine is quite user-friendly.

Hi!
I don't usually write reviews on gear but I like the R16 a lot so there you go.. Recently we have been playing gigs with our jazz/funk trio at a small lounge in downtown Calgary. The owners asked us to have the music played over their house sound system in the adjoining restaurant. I use the R16 to plug in their house mixer, DI guitar and bass and use a pair of condensors as overheads and it works great. Biggest benefit for us it that we can record everything at the same time, with great results. At home I can copy the files to the computer and use the R16 as a soundcard and mixer to mix down the songs, works great!
Really recommended guys, I wish this thing was available 20 years ago :)
Cheers,
Peter

I had the unit out of the box for an hour and it got scratched so you have to baby it. It only has linear recording, so it works best with a computer or as a portable recorder (it can run by battery) to be fair, you can bounce/merge tracks and you can punch in and out anywhere if you wish. It also comes with a copy of Cubase LE for Mac/PC and you can even use it to tune up. I just wish that it could time/pitch shift, loop the audio and that it was integrated with a music keyboard or some other type of large controller so that unauthorized users couldn't conceal it so easily.
It can sync with another unit but I don't see that it can sync to other gear. The included fx and the mixer sound very good. Inputs are dedicated to the tracks so routing is not very flexible but that's also less confusing to the user.
This thing is a studio in a box folks and really shines when it is paired with a CPU, good mics and a knowledgeable sound engineer.

This thing is great. Versatile, very acceptable sound quality (with a good mic), very portable, affordable, and most importantly, SIMPLE to use. Closest thing I've found to the ease of operation in an old TASCAM cassette 4-track. Add to that the ability to use it as an Analog/Digital converter, a control surface, and it seems like the last recorder I'll ever need to buy. Famous last words.
