I recently traded a Takamine EG523SC jumbo for this guitar and although the Takamine was really nice sounding and looked so beautiful, this Martin DX1 feels so much better in my hands. So comfortable to play and sounds awesome. I love the satin finish and playability of this guitar. This is my favorite acoustic so far and is an absolute keeper!!

Look at all these high ratings! Tried about 7 guitars at L&M Sound Room @‘Kanata location. My GF and I chose this purely by sound comparison. Neck may be wider than a Yamaha, tho not much and the spacing is perfect with the neck radius. Barre chords = FUN. Warning ⚠️ the body is very sensitive to atmospheric conditions (not covered by warranty) so try to keep the room humidity at 45% in the winter, or in a case (not included) with humidifiers (I like Kyser, the best by far) or even wet sponges in a sliced zip lock bag. The spruce body will crack, in furnace air, dry winters. Mine did, 3 days after purchase. L&M replaced the guitar. Was mine cut from a bad tree? Who knows? You don’t want cracks that’s for sure. I called Martin in the US and asked if I could use the fantastic Dr. Duck’s Axe Wax on the body and interestingly they said, no- on this spruce top, use only Johnson’s floor wax. I bought 2 small tubs and yes, it really is the right choice to keep the body top conditioned. I later went on the website and also phoned Martin and ordered 2 new saddles that match this particular guitar. I may wish to shave abit off for lower action, but actually the factory saddle and nut, are close to perfect. And thank you, Kanata L&M store for excellent service. (Since bought an EC Strat) and will be buying more guitars. Hope this helps others.

Guitar is great but my review is regarding the customer service at the Brampton location. We're in the midst of a covid lock down so I picked up the guitar without having the chance to inspect it. When i brought it home i noticed that one of the strap buttons was missing. I emailed the store in hopes I'd get a response within a few days, fully expecting I'd have to go back to the store to pick up the missing button. Instead, Dan Mcnab emailed me right back saying he'd be sending one of his empolyees over to my house (40 minutes away) with the missing part (along with some other goodies). Great to see that customer service is important to Dan, the Brampton store and L&M.

I’ve been looking at many different acoustics the last few months. I spent many hours online researching different reviews. This Martin seems to have nothing but great reviews. I went to the local L&M and just tried out a bunch of different Martins, Taylor , and Gibson acoustics without looking at price tags. This one sounded up there with some of the high end guitars. I even liked it more than some more expensive guitars. Sure most of the solid wood high end ones sounded a felt a bit better , but not for double or triple the price. The Martin DX1AE looks nice and clean. Nothing fancy. No high gloss finish , which I am not a fan of anyways. I prefer the satin look and feel. My advice is to go to your local L&M , and do a blind test without looking at the price tags , I’m sure you will be surprised with there this one stacks up.

I was actually determined to buy a D-18, so as I was playing the D-18 in the store I saw the DX1AE hanging on the wall. I picked it up and started playing it without looking at the price tag. I was VERY impressed at the sound and build quality! Then I looked at the price tag and saw that it was a quarter the price of the D-18...! I immediately said to myself, "This is a no-brainer!" Bye, bye D-18...you simply do not justify the price... I bought the DX1AE without a second thought...!

I played all the acoustic guitars at L&M in Brampton and this one sounded the best. One cannot beat the price and I found that it sounded much better than the Epi Masterbilts, Taylor 110e, Yamaha, etc. Intonation is off a bit on the bass E string and a little off on the B string, however the sound and resonance is amazing. Humidity should not be as much of a problem as well. Play one and you will see. Plain Jane Dreadnought that is a Martin and that pretty much says it all. Records very good as well with a mic. Pick up is not that great but gets the job done well enough.

I think this guitar sounds better than the other big brand offerings at this price point. Clarity sustain and intonation are really nice. The set up on mine was good right out of the box, really easy to play, low action. The only dilemma you have really is deciding if you want this Martin or if you want to spend 300 more for the DRS2. It's basically the same guitar but made of solid wood instead of HPL and Richlite. I've owned both, played them side by side and being that literally the only difference between the two is the body/side/neck materials, it's clear that it does make a huge difference in the tone of the guitar. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Just listen to them side by side and you can decide.

After playing for 57 years during which I've owned 2 - D35's and 3 - D28's and dozens of other acoustics, this is without a doubt my favourite sounding and playable acoustic guitar. Just one of those things. It fits my hands perfectly and gives me the balanced big and smooth sound I've long sought. Might not be right for you but it sure was right for me. Try it, you just might fall in love.

Plain looking guitar, which kinda makes it look cool .I like the the rich sound when played acoustically but the pickup leaves much to be desired...I use an acoustic preamp to enhance the sound. Action is pretty good after a free setup from L&M.

Not as "pretty" as other guitars (inlays fretboard deigns etc) - but what a sound! I haven't plugged mine in but have heard another just like it (beautiful). Tried all the guitars in the showroom including those forbiden temptations (anything over 2,000) but I kept coming back to this one due to the sound and price point. Been playing for 2 years and still loving the sounds that comes from this guitar. Just thinking about it makes me want to pick it up and play! NO regrets.

It came down to Yamaha FG and A series vs this Martin. Don't let online blogs about the HPL warping worry you. It's absolute nonsense. This guitar sounds as good as a $3000 Martin. The HPL is Laminate, which means it more resistant to wear and tear than solid body guitars. The sound and tone of this guitar are unreal. The electronics are great too. The neck is smooth. The action is very good. Overall I'm very happy with this one. If I lost it, I'd buy it again.

I have this guitar in a lefty version. Being left handed limits me to the number of guitars i can try out in the store. Having said that, i did try 5 or 6 different lefty guitars. I had a Denver beginner lefty before this purchase. I'm not going to say that this is better or worse than Taylor, or $2000 guitars, etc, etc. What i will say is "go to the store and try out guitars yourself". I tried this one, the Seagull S6, a $2000 Taylor and another expensive Martin which i forget the model....and a few more. To me this guitar fit perfectly in my arms. was easy to play from the get go. The sound is leaps and bounds way better than my beginner. I have only owner it a few months, so i can't comment on the quality/durability. I love the sound of it. I know purist will argue it doesn't sound like the "real" Martin. I tried 2 of them, and while they did sound slightly different, i couldn't tell much of a difference in my amateur ears. If i were rich, i probably would've gotten a more expensive one....but i love the sound and playability of this guitar.

Love this guitar! have owned a few Martin's over the years such as a DX-1, 00-15M, D-16GT and now this one. Made in Mexico not PA like my other ones, including original DX-1, but who can tell? Quality all around, no loose anything, perfect intonation on every note. Solid top means very susceptible to humidity so watch out for that. Affects action easily. Keep it comfortable and it will love you back. Everyone comments who nice it looks and sounds. A keeper for sure!

I don't own this particular model but the DX1R (US made, but who cares). However I have played this model in the store. Very easy to play. Music just rolls off a simple strum. Easy for beginners. Sounds great. You still have to humidify it even though the back sides and neck are not solid. This does not take away from the sound. I had a choice between spending 2K for a D18 or a little more for a D28. For me personally, at this stage of my musical journey, I could not appreciate the difference. Very deep sound. Great bass extension. I also own a Larrivee OM3R, and this guitar nicely compliments it. Can't recommend this guitar enough.

Over the years I've owned and/or tried dozens of expensive acoustic and acoustic-electric guitars. This economy Martin delivers a sound that rivals any of the top end guitars I've played, including my 1965 Martin D18. I've had it for 6 years and can say it has held up well and like its Martin kin only improves with age. I would recommend this guitar to anyone who is looking for a dreadnought guitar with a rich sound and a clean traditional appearance.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
