Ahmed Adnan Saygun was one of the most significant Turkish composers of his time and effectively combined Western musical practice with Turkish folk elements.
This oratorio from 1946, is an hour-long work originally written for four vocal soloists, a full chorus and full orchestra. Written in a post-romantic style, it sets to music several poems by the influential 13th century Anatolian mystic poet Yunus Emre. Saygun employs Turkish modes and folk melodies which compliment the poems which are written in the tradition of Anatolian folk poetry.
