Since 1985, Dave Monette has been designing mouthpieces to do what no other mouthpiece has ever done: provide constant pitch centre, regardless of how loud or soft, or how low or high a musician plays. This acoustical innovation improves every aspect of brass instrument performance - sound, response, intonation, and endurance.

PRANA mouthpiece models are built with the most cutting edge Monette technology available. For the last few years they have been creating new mouthpiece designs and enhancing existing ones using their proprietary "vector design" mouthpiece design software in conjunction with a computer controlled CNC lathe, allowing for "single-point cut" rims and cups on their mouthpieces. This gives the cups a perfectly smooth finish, without machine marks. Even more importantly, the new lathe and design software has given them expanded flexibility to refine classic designs, and develop all-new, improved designs for many of the leading players they work with - all at an unprecedented rate.

The New "S" Series (SLAP!) Mouthpieces
Many of Monette's latest mouthpiece designs have a distinct new shape to the cup, which they call the "S Series." The first of these new mouthpieces was born several years ago when Dave Monette came up with the improved MF III mouthpiece for Maynard Ferguson. The original idea was to keep the basic MF II rim, but upgrade the cup design to improve every aspect of how the mouthpiece plays and sounds.

Over the next few years, this design concept was adapted to other sizes of Monette mouthpieces. Hundreds of prototypes were made before these new designs ever made it into the hands of any clients, making subtle adjustments to optimize the design details for each rim and cup size. These new designs have been field-tested by Wynton, Maynard and many other top players with in some of the most demanding playing situations imaginable.

Why Are They Called "SLAPS?"
The "S" series mouthpieces hold intensity better at soft dynamics, and offer a wider variety of articulation. When you play aggressively on them, the impact at the start of each note can sound and even feel like a "slap!" Hence the nickname, which has seemed to stick.

The top part of the cup is slightly more bowl shaped, which helps produce a larger sound. The "turn" of the "S" in the cup profile (where the mouthpiece cup turns from concave to convex) is more pronounced, making the mouthpiece more efficient for a faster response. The bottom of the cup has a more generous blend into the throat, which produces larger "targets' on every note so the mouthpiece is more forgiving to play.
