This is it, folks; the fabled green box that's been igniting creativity, passion and sheer awe since Line 6 first released its digitally modeled marvels on the world in 2000. Containing 16 models based on legendary echo and delay boxes from the storied Maestro EP-1 Echoplex to the awesome T.C. Electronic 2290, the DL4 has in turn become a classic in its own right, as popular with guitarists as it is with singers, drummers, bassists, keyboardists, and anyone who wants a pure 24-bit true stereo signal path in the service of delays that run the gamut from gritty and psychedelic to pristine and heavenly.

You'd be insane to pack an original Roland RE-101 Space Echo or Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man into the back of your van for a club tour, but the DL4 packs models of those sounds and many more into a rugged, road-tested steel housing that can run for up to 30 hours on four C batteries or with the optional PX-2G power adaptor. Models of classic delay boxes - and the sweet choruses and vibratos that accompany many of them - are just the beginning; the DL4 also boasts innovative sounds like its Auto-Volume Echo, which combines a volume swell with a tweakable tape-style echo; or the outstanding Reverse Delay, which allows you to play stunning backwards guitar solos on the fly.

You also get those U2-style Rhythmic Delays in several metric flavors, super-cool Ping-Pong Delay effects, and outrageous stereo panned repeats. Look, if it aint in the DL4, it probably doesn't exist . . . until you create it. What's more, with its onboard 14-second looper, the DL4 is both the perfect practice tool and the ultimate creative canvas for crafting overdubs and creating textures, with its speed and reverse modes ideal for sonic adventurers and arrangement-minded recordists alike.

Like all Line 6 stompbox Modelers, the DL4 boasts a simple and sturdy front panel design, with four footswitches for saving and recalling your sounds, and six knobs for selecting models and tweaking parameters, with distinct assignments for each knob depending on the delay model youve chosen. Paired with the optional EX-1 expression pedal, which lets you morph between two radically different settings for each of your sounds, the DL4 is truly the ultimate delay pedal, making the history of echo and delay available to your creative future.

Getting a little long in the tooth - there are definitely better units available these days, both better sounding and with way more headroom - but still a very useful tool that has allowed me to develop a pretty unique style over the years. Simple to use despite the plethora of options. Not many digital machines hold up as well or for so long. Would I buy one now? Probably not; I'd spend the extra hundred or two to get an Empress or Strymon same thing, mostly for the extra headroom. Worth considering that it has been out for about twenty years, and only started disappearing off top players' boards about five years ago. I do feel they have a bit of a nerve pricing them so high still - they are no longer cutting edge technology - but one of these and an expression pedal will open your ears to a whole new way of thinking about your sound.

As a person who own many delays (tape, vintage and modern analogs, digital) I'll say this will never replace the real thing. No contest! That being said, it very useful as a gigging alternative. So many touring musicians can't be wrong. I'm still learning different ways to use it (Still need to try it with an expression pedal) About the 14 second looper everyone is complaining about: tap the half speed switch first and you get a 28 second looper. It sounds to me like the buffer is activated continuously while in loop mode It can be set true bypass but I've recently found I needed a buffer at the end of my signal chain and found it does the job well. My biggest complaint is the lack of a "real" subdivision adjustment. It's a glaring oversight and I'm surprised that they never updated it. I believe there were some quality issues in the past...not sure about newer ones though. They also don't like having beer dumped onto them.

I've had this unit for a couple of months now. I upgraded from a MXR Digital Delay, there is definitely no comparison this thing excels in all categories. If you're serious about your Delay and want to keep that authentic analog sound then this is your pedal.

Seriously cool pedal. The delays are great but the looper is by far the best part for me. Reverse and halftime, which becomes double-time if you record in half-time mode. Shame it can only record 14 seconds. The built-in footswitches are terrible and will break, so do yourself a favour and replace them with quality switches. The thing is a huge pain to take apart though - and you really do have to completely take it apart to get at anything - so good luck.

This is one of my go-to pedals. The delay options are awesome and the Tap tempo is super necessary. However, I've had to bring mine in for repairs more than once in the last year. Buy the store warranty. The Techs at L&M are great.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
