Format: Book
Instrumentation: Piano

From Rote to Note, Book 2: Late Elementary to Early Intermediate Piano Studies that Reinforce Theory and Technique contains twelve piano studies based on a theoretical or technical concept. The studies are designed to be taught from a musical map without the aid of traditional notation.

  • Each study includes an abstract that maps the piece to aid with memory and practice at home as well as traditional notation of the piece.
  • A teacher section identifies each study's concept, giving steps for introducing the musical map, and outlines strategies for teaching the study by rote.
  • The studies allow students to move intellectually from rote to note, experiencing musical elements before relating them to notation.
  • Concepts covered include Thirds, Sixths, Ascending Broken Chords and Inversions, Descending Broken Chords and Inversions, Five-finger Patterns, Scale Fingering, Chromatic Scale, Hand-over-Hand Broken Chords, Arpeggios, and Broken Chords and Hand-over-Hand Crossovers.
E.L. Lancaster is a piano faculty member at California State University Northridge and serves as editor-in-chief of Piano Education Press, the publishing arm of the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy. Omar Roy is Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at the University of South Carolina where he is Coordinator of Group Piano and teaches applied piano and piano pedagogy. The rote studies included in the book have been tested with students and found to help reinforce important theoretical concepts and technical skills. At the same time, E.L. and Omar hope students enjoy the studies that they learn during the process of moving From Rote to Note.
