Plumes Small Signal Shredder

Plumes is a low to medium gain overdrive based on the trusty lime-green overdrive that has been an industry staple since its inception. This is the kind of overdrive that works in conjunction with a good valve amp to create the warm saturation people like to call "transparent". While this circuit has been the foundation of countless other overdrives available today, we feel the Plumes has a few twists and turns to make it unique enough to stand out.

The Plumes does away with the trusted JRC4558 OpAmp and the BJT buffers and replaces them with low noise JFET OpAmps for a more robust and precise signal with a significantly lower noise floor. The 9v power input is internally converted to +/-9v for more headroom and a clarity that is almost three dimensional. The input impedance has been raised to a whopping 10megaohms for a stronger signal with more clarity and chime. Cutoff of the tone control has been adjusted to deliver a more useful range of travel with more booming bass on the low end without sacrificing the cutting midrange and bright top end.

Last, but certainly not least, the Plumes offers three different clipping options to ensure that it will work with a wide variety of gear and playing styles.
Mode 1 is symmetrical clipping utilizing a pair of light emitting diodes; this is the crunchiest setting the Plumes has to offer. When played through a clean amp, itll deliver a reasonable facsimile of that classic crunchy valve amp tone.
Mode 2 is clean boost mode. This eliminates the soft clipping diodes altogether and leaves you with straight OpAmp drive. This is perfect for pushing your clean tone out in front or driving the preamp of an already overdriven amp into tasteful breakup territory.
Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to the stock screamer but with more output
and clean clarity; the tone some people describe as "transparent".

Features

• Unique approach to a classic tube-like overdrive circuit offering more headroom, lower noise and far better signal integrity
• Features 3 different clipping options: symmetrical LED, asymmetrical silicon, and no diode OpAmp drive
• Reimagined tone control to sculp low end, clear top end, and focused midrange
• True bypass
• Silent relay-based switching
• Features EarthQuaker Devices' proprietary FlexiSwitch Technology
• All-analog signal path

Tried it out and compared it to a Marshall od pedal, a fender od pedal, tube screamer, soul food and a blues driver and the winner by far was the plume, the three options give you lots of versatility and playing it I thought it to be and expected it to be a several hundred dollar pedal and was pleasantly surprised by its low cost and high build quality, if you need an overdrive pedal that can fatten up your tone or give it some grit without muddying the sound up then this is the pedal for you

Everyone has said it all! It is great and versatile. I use channel 1 as tube screameresque od and channel 2 for cleans and channel 3 my favorite for some of my distortions. Much more of a transparent od than the other two. Love it! I keep doing head to head challenges with other overdrive but this still keeps winning overall time and time again.

I wanted a pedal that I could use to put a little crunch on my clean sound, and boost my OD channel. Not really looking to get more breakup, but just tighten up the tone and more clarity for busy single note riffs. This pedal does both of these things really well, and for a TS it has a surprisingly full/ warm tone as a stand alone driver.
I generally run mine on the first mode, with the drive and tone knobs at about 10:30, and the volume just a hair past 9 (the volume output on this pedal is huge). Sounds good on the clean channel, with maybe just a little more compression than I'd like, but it really makes lead lines and percussive riffs on the OD channel POP!
Contrary to what has been stated, it does not take a battery, and I dont recommend pulling the bottom plate, as it is just plain depressing. The internals are almost entirely made up of a single plastic assembly, that likely takes a trained monkey less than 5 minuets to mount in the housing, and you get a sense of exactly how little that "Made in USA" sticker actually means. You know that old Boss pedal you've owned since 97 and it still works? I wouldnt expect that kind of lifespan out of this one. Unfortunately thats about par for the course now so one cant really dock too many points, especially when it sounds this good, at this price.

Tried switching this out with a few others but always came back to this one. It's more "natural" to me.
Chugging was good on others and was quiet on the Dirty Tree pedal I tried but they all sounded similar in a modern way and I found this kept the tone of your amp more.

I don't like tube screamers so I didn't have much interest in this one - until I heard a demo and had to buy it. I have a million overdrives and this one is a bit unique. Tone wise this trims a lot of bass and can add a lot of sparkle on top. Like a less refined (not as smooth) klon type thing. It puts guitars in a happy place on the spectrum. The gain toggle switch is great. It gives you 3 dirt pedals in one. 1 is biting sound, 2 is an open sound with no extra diods (my fave) and 3 is a darker, gainer sound with less output (least fave). To the guy saying it doesn't take a battery - unscrew the plate LOL. It's cheap. It sounds good. Bad points - it's a bit big in an old school case with screws. I hate the foot switch. It's a push quick to toggle and hold down for momentary, but I'm not used to the quick toggle and I constantly get momentary when I wanted toggle. Seems like a useless feature on a boost pedal. Recommended if you need a new flavor of dirt that trims bass and makes the top shine.

I tried this on Saturday. Came highly recommended and I can see why. Great pedal. I didn't buy it or the one I was comparing it to. Not to say this shouldn't be at the top or near on a persons list of pedals to buy. It probably should. With all the others I have it just didn't sell me on it at this time. Unlike others have suggested I wouldn't remove the 808 or and other TS just to have this one. I actually like the 808 I was comparing better and didn't buy it either. Not yet anyway. For me I will probably get the 808, then hopefully a Bonsai, then perhaps this one - maybe. If I didn't have any pedals I would buy the Bonsai first, maybe this one next but probably the Morning Glory and Angry Charlie first. All the pedals I named as well as this are "Top Drawer" "5%'rs" to me and hard to go wrong on any.

Whether played through a clean channel or over top an overdriven crunch channel This is by far the first overdrive pedal I have heard in 3o years with so much string clarity and tonal flexibility that it can be use in almost any situation Rock, Country and Even to add some sizzle to a Metal Drive channel. Definitely everyone should replace the 808 and its many versions with this unbeliecvable pedal

Best overdrive on the market right now, hands down. Built like a tank, sounds absolutely unreal no matter where the knobs are set and it’s dead quiet. No fizziness like a lot of other OD’s that I’ve tried in the past. Dare I say TubeScreamer killer?!

...This is it. Even if you have more than enough Tubescreamer-type pedals, the Plumes could be the perfect overdrive for you. EarthQuaker always impress with their effect choices and build quality, so for this low price, it's worth it just to have one on hand.

This pedal is great, you can't get a bad tone out of it. You can use it as a clean boost all the way to heavy crunch and distortion. The 3-way toggle allows you to get your desired tone from marshally to classic 808 tones. Can't recommend enough. Played it next to an OCD and had to go with this pedal. The price awesome for what you're getting.

Best overdrive/boost you can get in this price range. I've been running a sub octave fuzz into the LED drive option and it does unbelievably cool things to the signal. Can't recommend this pedal enough.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
