Since 1976, Harrell has been releasing recordings as a leader that consist almost entirely of his own compositions, and is constantly gaining recognition as one of today's leading jazz improvisers and composers. In 1996 Tom was awarded 'Trumpet Player of the Year' in both the critics' and readers' polls of DownBeat and Jazz Times magazines.
Originally, this book was to consist entirely of original Harrell compositions, but I think it is very important to analyse and contrast his improvisational approaches toward conventional harmonic compositions and his own compositions. Thus, I have also included four jazz standards which dramatically showcase his eminent lyricism.
In this first volume of Tom Harrell Trumpet Transcriptions you will find the tunes: Joy Spring, April Mist, Sail Away (Live and Studio), Hope St, Buffalo Wings, Suspended View, Glass Mystery, Vista, Brazilian Song, Blue in One, Weaver, Play of Light, Viable Blues, My Funny Valentine, I Remember You, Scrapple From the Apple.
