These studies are designed to encourage players to play musically at an early age. They are graded progressively, each one dealing with a specific point. Orchestral and chamber music extracts are included as early as possible, giving pupils a chance to play the music that they will meet later on. Each study is preceded by a brief note of advice on technique or interpretation.
The compilation was made in response to a request from a friend who had decided to learn the bassoon in her mid-fifties, and had no wish to be frightened by any unreasonable demands.
June Emerson has drawn from a wide range of material to assemble these ninety studies. Her own compositions represent nearly one third of the total and she devotes space to introducing and practising the tenor clef. Weissenborn, as the composer of perhaps the most played bassoon studies, is well represented but there is also material from Hinke's 'Elementary Method for Oboe' and studies by Popp, Gariboldi and Kohler.
Contents:
- Julius Weissenborn - 13 studies Wilhelm Popp - 6 studies and Gustav Hinke - 5 studies.
- Traditional or Folk - 10 studies.
- Other composers represented include Handel, Purcell, Nicholson, Kohler, Gariboldi, Soussman and Demnitz.
- Besides extracted bassoon parts from Mozart's Serenades No.10 (K361) and No.12 (K388), there are the bassoon parts from orchestral works by Haydn, Cimarosa, Dvorak (Serenade Op.44),
- Mendelssohn, Brahms and Grieg.
