I spent a lot of time sampling different headphones. I was surprised at how different the headphones were from each other - not necessarily in quality, but in the attributes of the sound filling my ears.
I really think a lot has to do with personal preference. For me personally (in this price range), these were crispest and and had the best range and balance.
A problem that seems to plague every headphone I've ever owned is wear and tear. After about 8 years with light usage the outer lining has all come off where it sits at the top of the head.

I own the DT-770 and DT-990 which I like but was looking for a different sound signature. My brother had red pair of M50x so I did some research and the only headphones to compare to the Beyerdynamic were Audio Technica M50x. I Iisten to bass heavy edm music for casual listening. Very happy with my purchase

For listening on portable devices these are fine. That's what I bought them for.
For critical listening, tracking, recording etc... I wouldn't recommend them. I record/track with Sennheiser HD650's and these M50x are not even close. No surprise there with the cost difference. For simple arrangements with not too much mid range instrumentation, they will work (hiphop, rap). They struggle in the mids/upper mids and sound harsh with denser arrangements (guitars).
Quite sensitive to input impedance. I don't believe there's a hiZ model to use with headphone amps. They sound best with my tablet and iPod classic which is what I use them for, ok with my phone and terrible with my interface (Presonus Quantum 2626) headphone amp which they're not designed for. So, check them out with the device you're planning on using them with first. And, be aware there's a break in period for the speaker to "open" up.

I had seinheser hd555 for 12 years and they broke.. I needed closed back and wow. Those take me to another world! So precise and bright! Perfect match with my new SSL 2. Only downside, I have big head and they are just a little too tight, which also serve good for the closed back design. Nothing leaks!

Out of the wall of headphones that were in the Burlington store these were not there and was ready to leave because they were all similar.. then I was asked to try these that weren’t up yet and WOW! Full mix was right there from my studio... everything! And when I went to various studios I pulled out my headphones and they had the same ones! Maybe others in a room but these were on the console! ;) that told me a lot! My Roland V-Drums and mixes sound great through them! Very comfortable. I will eventually get more for my studio but because of the price point it’s slow.. ;) but worth it!!!

My last pair of ATHM30X were awesome value, I sold them along with some Roland drums. So I had a perfect opportunity to upgrade. My decision was based totally on my previous experience with AT and reviews here. Luckily I was right to do so. These fit perfectly, very adjustable and with 3 Cord options it’s very convenient. My iPhone Works as good as my board with them. For practicing guitar, bass or digital drums through the board or on the treadmill they sound great. Very comfortable and little fatigue.

The sound happens in the middle of your head. Greatly improves music & movies on my laptop. Big and nuanced sound. I found on flights the cable head was fragile, and the jack end going into the headset is not a standard jack, so you have to order custom cable replacement for what should just be a standard jack. That's my beef. Baby your jacks. But it does come with a few cables, so I'm now using the coiled one.
I've used my headset a lot on the road and at home since Oct (9 mos), and the ear muffs are not yet degrading from sweat.

Of all the closed headphones I have experience with in the $200 or less category (which include HD280, HD25, dt770, 7506, kns8400, among others), these are the most well-rounded. They are comfortable, efficient, sound great and include a long straight cable for studio work. Frequency response is a little fun--I wouldn't mix on them. But if my house burned down and I had to replace all my tracking headphones, I'd just buy a bunch of these and call it a day.

These are great. We go through lots of headphones in our studio so we've experimented from time to time. Just purchased 2 sets and we're very impressed. The 3 clip-lock cables come with a mini plug to 1/4 inch adapter and they provide a convenient case. We've spent up to $800 for headphones and these are comparable in all aspects. They sound great and seem well built. This model will become our studio standard as we replace future sets.

I have used countless different types of headphones in the studio. I've always liked the Sony 7509's but sadly they stopped making them. The ATH-M50x is a great replacement, and the best headphones I've owned to date. They sound great, are lightweight, fold up nicely when you're on the go, the cable is replaceable, and they don't cost a fortune. I can wear them for a solid hour before my head needs a short break. If you want better-sounding headphones you'll need to spend a lot more. To me it's just not worth it. The ATH-M50x is the best value out there.

Ive had these for about 2 years now and Ill probably always use these in the studio for tracking, and Im having good results mixing too. The main thing is getting to know youre source and once you know how your headphones translate with your monitors then your golden. I often start a mix on headphones when Im out, or cant make noise late at night or early in the morning. I feel confident that these are flat and clear enough I could mix only on these, I wouldnt unless i had to, but I could! Also These are extremely comfterable, Ive worn these for hours at a time and they dont get annoying at all! I also just listen to music alot on these! The Bass it good, hyped slighly in the 80-120hz range, pretty flat in the mids, if not just slightly bumped around the 400-600 range, and has a very nice high end, smooth and bright, but not harsh in any way! AT knows what theyre doing with these headphones and theres a reason tons of people use them! Again, even if not for mixing, theyre just good for tracking or just listening to music! The only con is the hinges for the ear swivels are sort of weak, my first pair one of the sides broke within a week and wouldnt sit properly, but long and mcquade replaced them on the spot(thats why I love L and M. my second pair has been going strong almost 2 years so just be gentle with them and dont twist the cans te wrong way by accident!

Okay, I'll admit it, I play a lot of World of Warcraft. My cheapo headphones were ok but worn out so time came to replace them. A couple of my guild mates highly recommended the ATH M50's so I thought I'd give them a try. The instore trial was nice, but when I got home, I knew then that I had made the right purchase. The lovely music from WoW and the Avatar soundtrack sounded so much better. There were delightful elements I didn't even know existed! I am so glad my online buddies suggested these headphones.

I use a Fender Mustang 3 and live in an apartment (Yup, volume maybe 1 or 2 at home). Having owned multiple headphones, I thought they sounded okay, when I was plugged into the amp, was I wrong. ATH-M50X's sound like I'm not wearing phones. They reproduced the non-phone sound faithfully. As what almost seems like a bonus, they are light and super comfortable.

Although a little on the pricey side these headphones are amazing. Clear sounds from high to low with little bleed. Great for mixing or just listening to music walking down the street. I would definitely get another pair if I broke these.

These headphones are rather amazing for their price-point. They have a beautiful soundstage suited for most all music; there is enough bass, the mids are decent and the treble is quite good although has a tinny sound to it. In my opinion this tinny sound helps bring out the cymbals more so I favor it.

I needed a new set of headphones for my home studio. I wanted a set of phones that would provide immediate feedback during the mixing/mastering functions. The headphones I wanted ($349) were out of stock, the sales guy suggested that I give these at try (30 day money back guarantee) so I did. Man, I was really impressed, for the money, these headphones perform. The clarity, crispness, and bottom end make mixing a breeze. If you are looking for a great set of headphones for mixing/mastering, or just listening to music, but don't want to spend large money, do yourself a favor and check these out. You will be as surprised as I was, believe me!

Just bought these they sound great, read lots of reviews and researched for hours before I picked these. They had some on display, which was nice to be able to try before you buy. They are slightly bass forward but not in a bad way, seems to be very common for headphones with all the "Beats" chatter. The short cord is really nice it necks down to fit on my tinny stupid jack hole on my phone case which means no removing the case everytime you use them. The only bad thing I can see is they do leak sound quite a bit, in a quiet room if your listening to them at a mid to high level its noticeable and probably annoying for others. That's really my only complaint, the sound quality new out of the box is perfect I love them and they should only get better once they have broke in. They do go very loud just from my iPhone 5s running them full volume is too loud for me, sound does get distorted at that level as well. Price is great too, but I would still recommend finding a pair to try before you buy not everyone loves them from some other reviews I've read. I listen to mostly rock, some pop, dance and rap great for these types of music.

Like The title says, they are the best. They are under 200$ and they sound phenomenal. They seem to suited more for listening to music and general playback rather than recording. I guess it's a matter of opinion. They aren't as power hungry as many other more expensive headphones so they can be powered fairly well by phones and mp3 players, so if you have a good Equalizer, they are by far the best sounding headphones you can get for portable music (I guess I have to say considering the price, but that is pretty much a non existent factor). Look up more reviews!
