Composer: Dean Sorenson
Format: Score and Parts
Instrumentation: Jazz Ensemble (FlexJazz)
Level: 1
What, So?, one of the most iconic jazz recordings of all time is Miles Davis' "So What". What, So? borrows the same chord progression but features a melody that is more approachable for young players. The key of concert Eb minor is used on the bridge. The melody here is presented in unison, making it easier to rehearse and help everyone learn together. There are many uses of forte-piano-crescendo figures in this chart. The solo section, while largely in concert D minor, inserts a measure of Ami7 every four bars along with a slight variation in the bass line and comping. A perfect chart to introduce young students to this wonderful music.
Kjos FlexJazz -- This innovative new jazz series lets you create a jazz ensemble using any combination of instruments that are available. FlexJazz pieces are scored at the easiest levels and allow for maximum flexibility of instrumentation and instrument assignments. FlexJazz scores include four parts, plus parts for the rhythm section. Each of the four parts can be assigned to whatever instrumentation is available. As long as all four parts are covered, regardless of the instrumentation used, these pieces will sound full and complete.
