"My great-great-great grandfather, Charles Shumway, crossed the icy Mississippi River with his young family in early February 1846 and joined thousands of Mormon pioneers on a 1300-mile trek to their new home in the Salt Lake Valley. His wife, Julia Ann, and a daughter, Harriet would die along the way. One of Charles' fellow travelers, William Clayton, wrote the lyrics of Come, Come, Ye Saints that year, and it quickly became a motivational anthem to the thousands of pioneers who crossed the plains, and millions since who see the words and music as a source of optimism and faith on the sometimes-arduous journey of life.
